But do I stop go up tide down tide .
I have fitted the FF ( RayMarine) I got from LBS to the little toy, now while running at 10kn I saw a fish on the screen so should I slow down stop over the spot or go either way !!.
I'm out on the Wash in the morning with the high tide I hope to catch a fish perhaps more than one LOL
The unit seems to be a great bit of kit well worth the £230 as the depth and speed side of things appear's very accurate.

Cheers
Mick

Is what you are seeing really a fish. It could be a bit of "rubbish" or weed giving the echo. Take the fish icons with a 'pinch of salt'.

If you are using it on the Wash look out for King John's treasure, find it and you will not need to fish, you'll be able to buy what you want from MacFisheries.

hi
as a general rule if there is an echo indicating there are fish about, they will be directly under the transducer, or slightly astern of it. As Barryh stated it is'nt necessarily a fish, but don't be put of try fishing astern anyway.
ps mackerel will not show on a fishfinder as they do not have a swim bladder and it is the swim bladder that produces the echo we see on our finders

My kids got very excited when they saw a HUGE fish on the fishfinder on Sunday. I missed it 'cos I was swimmimg under the boat at the time.

It took them ages to catch on,

BTW its very difficult to snorkel and giggle at the same time.

Don't rely on the finder to indicate fish, as has been said the fish ID feature is a bit of a gimmic, mind you if you are over a good shoal you will soon know as the screen will turn black. Rather, use the finder lo locate a feature ( gulley, bar, small wreck ect) and fish just downtide of it.

I think you will find that mackerel do show on the modern high frequency fish finders - 172 / 200 - in the same way as a piece of weed (which also lacks a swim bladder/forums/images/icons/smile.gif).
Personally I no longer look for fish as when they do show I get frustrated if I can't catch them; and if they don't I tend not to fish in a committed manner - so don't catch them!
So inshore I use it to search out features and then fish those assuming fish are there.

Nout out there mate unless you like muscles .
A windy wave pounding trip it turned out, after 1.5 miles from Tabs head we thought it best to head back in waves look bigger in a toy boat .
Still no FISH !!!!!!!!!!!
So it look's like we shall have to find the odd bit of junk or so that the tide wont shift as there is nout below but sand or mud.
There were plenty of fish images and at different depths especialy with side ways looking, turned on . The 200hz or 50 hz dual made things a little more interesting.
cheers
