First weekend onboard

The weekend started early for me last week, Thursday morning 06:00 The Volvo PDI was scheduled for 09:00 at Hamble Point and I wanted to be there as it would be her first trip out in UK waters. I woke up early, the alarm was set for 06:30 but excitement got the better of me. I left early and went straight to the launch to see if she was already in the water. Perfect timing, she was being lowered in as I walked up.

 
The Volvo engineer (from Golden Arrow) did some pre-checks and talked me through regular maintenance checks I should be doing. We went to the fuel pontoon and filled up calibrating the fuel gauge 74 litres at a time. Hole in wallet we went down the Hamble river to find calm waters ideal for speed trial.

Engine warmed up and Vodia box plugged in, time for some WOT to check engine parameters ok. D6-370 kit 3600rpm, burning about 79lph running about 2bar boost. All good.


She hit a respectible 27.7 knots with full fuel tanks and four onboard.

Speed trial over, it was time to head back to the office to catch up on work...the delivery trip was booked for Friday morning and Osmotech had a few small jobs to finish (thanks to Joe who worked late Thurs evening).

A sleepless night, followed by plenty of coffee in the morning and me and dad head down for the delivery trip. Thank you to Paul (Romans8) and his wife for running us down from Haslar marina to Hamble Point to save hassle with cars. Paul came along for the delivery trip and spend some good time onboard over the weekend, some great hospitality shown by his familty and great supply of home made cake :)

The dealer supplied a skipper to show me the ropes, we cruised from Hamble Point straight to Haslar marina...sea was calm cruised along at about 19-20 knots, turbo making a nice sound all the way. Half way there we slowed down and stopped, skipper asked me to turn to port for a 360 turn, then to starboard. She doesn't like turning to starboard as much, the prop walk having an effect on starboard turns. Good to know.

On to the marina, for my first berthing experience on a 10m boat, save for the 6m Rib I chartered from Mendez marine a few weeks ago. Skipper gives me some pointers on the first couple of attempts, then stands back and lets me crack on. Thanks to bows in berth (so I have sun in cockpit) and the great control from bow and stern thruster is all goes smoothly. Slow is good, 1-1.5 knots down the marina, quick blip of reverse when I'm level with pontoon. Then a great tip from skipper - stand up looking out the starboard window, bow and stern thruster controls in left hand, throttle in right. It makes perfect sense and helps a lot. I can look out of the window and check how square she is with pontoon and adjust with thrusters even with some breeze blowing. I practice a few times more, confidence feeling much better than just a few hours ago.

Enjoyed staying on her for the weekend, me and dad watched F1 quali and the race on Sunday and went out for a couple of runs in Solent over the weekend. Got told off for wash in Portsmouth harbour, live and learn I was only doing 8 knots and didn't look too bad to me.

If the survey goes well I'll be buying an Antares 30 in a couple of weeks and moving her from Chichester to Lymington.

Actually I was in Haslar a while ago looking at a completely different boat when we saw Romans8, which is what started us thinking about an Antares 30 in the first place! Talking to a few people it seems a stern thruster is a useful addition for this boat, so Osmotch will be fitting one as soon as she's back in her new berth.
 
Always an exciting time, looks a great boat and I particularly like your dash, very smart! Hope you have many hours of fun with her.

Seems they are stricter in Portsmouth than they are in Poole on wash.. On our mooring near the channel on a good day there is a constant battering of wash from fairly large boats trying to do the 10kn speed limit but it's way too slow to plane but well above hull speed so they just plough past and we get thrown all over the place..
 
Looking good Anders,

I like the fuel consumption indicator, I do not have this feature on my boat.
I would be interested what consumption you are getting at cruising speed?, I find a sweet spot about 20Kn @2900revs.
Did you manage to get the pics of the internal of the stern thruster install?

Congratulations Anders on taking delivery. Looks great with the grey hull, and the dash looks especially good. Once you get to that sized boat someone somewhere will complain about wash whatever speed you do. I got it the other day with 2.9kts on my GPS! It's them not you so carry on regardless and of course never make eye contact :)

If anyone asks tell them the sun always shines here and there are so many great restaurants in Gosport it's a struggle to decide where to eat :)

People watching at the weekend as the local talent heads over to Gunwharf Quays on the ferry is interesting. It's like wildlife on one....

Osmotech know their way around these boats well, I'm sure their sparky could wire stern thruster with his eyes closed. I'd pull the trigger on the stern thruster if you like stress free berthing, it gives so much control over the back end.

I'm going to run some detailed tests this weekend so I have a baseline for performance with clean bum. I'll record speed (sog?), lph, turbo boost and oil pressure. From memory I think it burned around 55lph at 3000rpm, but I'll have detailed results this weekend if the sea permits.

I forgot to ask Osmotech during the last visit, I'll speak with them today. Failing that, bumpy_the_dog above is having one fitted.

Thanks I like the grey hull, got a classy look about it. Chuffed with the dash, I had the boost gauge fitted to even up the number of volvo gauges (Beneteau said boost gauge was incompatible for some reason), so Husdon marine installed for me.

Cockpit and Flybridge courtesy LED's are in, thanks for the help sourcing those. They kick off a lot of light right now, but will calm down once the Flexiteek decking goes in.

It was Portsmouth harbour master in Rib that came over to complain of wash, so I slowed down to near idle speed. Made me laugh though, as he gunned it to another boat creating far more wash than I was!!

I like the marina, glad I chose it over Swanwick. We enjoyed evening meals in the lightship, is Hardys ok?

I bought a set of binoculars for out at sea, I'll give them a go for local wildlife spotting :D

Thanks for persevering with the stern thruster thing.
The only info I really need, is how much access is cut in the side of the box that the steering arm is mounted on? I have nutted the rest of it out
You can access it by crawling down the starboard side in the lazzerette towards the transom and look right after the end of the fuel tank.
I also noticed that your Rocna does not have a retainer bow, would not risk using the anchor without it as it can jump out with chain rubbing on the gelcoat is not what you want.

Ok no problem, I'll crawl in and take some pics I'll be back on the boat tomorrow afternoon.

The retaining pin is on the list, I'll probably need to have something made up. It does seem a good fit though when pulled tight in. I had a stainless plate made up to protect the underneath as you recommended, I'm also looking at one to protect the anchor locker lid, as the chain flaps around hitting the edges when windlass is operating. May be a non issue if someone is up front with anchor locker open?

Just one question, I couldn't see any trim tabs on the boat. Is that correct, or did I miss them?
I'm asking because the difference in steering to port vs. stbd that you already noticed is something you can surely live with, but you might find annoying the heeling when cruising in cross wind. And with a single screw, trim tabs are the only way to correct that.

I was surprised she hit that speed with the kit I've installed...TV's, 2 x 260Ah 6V Trojans, inverter, 45m chain etc, I thought performance would be down but seems not by much. Not that it's good for the engine to run around at max revs, but I can give it a five minute blast now and then to clean out the engine.

The trim tabs are there, you can see part of the controller bellow the thruster controls. I haven't played with them much, I trimmed bow down a bit in some chop and it helped but I need to investigate trimming to gain speed or save fuel.

On Saturday I had first experience of beam sea. Strange sensation being carried sideways with waves, but good fun trying to steer a straight line. Enjoying these new experiences.
