Hi everyone, first post.
Am planning to travel from home port of San Pedro de Salinas, near Torrevieja , Spain to Ibiza via Formentera on or around June 1st, depending upon weather. This will be first long range trip in my Cranchi Mediterainee 43. Am experienced boater, with very experienced crew, 4 of us in total. Trip should not be a problem for the boat etc., but would appreciated advice as weather to go direct, approx 135 miles, or track up the coast to Denia, overnight and then across from there.
I am very mixed as to what to do. There is no issue with the boat which has been fully serviced and carries all safety kit etc.
Anybody who has done this trip, please advise pros and cons,
Thanks,
Roger

Ibiza via Formentera on or around June 1st, depending upon weather.
Welcome Roger.
I can't help a great deal with specific passage planning advice, but we prefer to keep passages to 4 / 5 hours or 80-100 miles when possible, so if we had the time we would schedule in a stopover if there was a decent option (which I imagine Denia would be).
The reason for the post is to say that we are hoping to be in Ibiza and Formentera from 5th June so look out for us on CLOUD9.
We will be with a number of other boats making the trip from Cala d'Or. Anybody on here part of the convoy?

I have done your exact trip a few times now.

Unless the weather window is perfect I don't see any major benefit from heading direct, you will save at best 10 miles versus tracking the coast (straight line track).
I would head direct to Isla de Benidorm and then if all good head east from there. This gives you plenty of places to bail out or refuel along the way. If you want to break the trip in two head no further than Moraira (very nice marina and town), going to Denia will just add unnecessary miles. From Moraira it's about 60nm across.

It can get very choppy in the middle - I would recommend this website, it lists all the weather buoys around Spain. Click on the one between the coast and Ibiza and you will get very accurate hours forecasts for wind and waves.

+1 aim for Moraira and go from there. You can stick you head around cabo de nao just before Javea and see what the big sea bit looks like as the cape tends to shelter the sea to the south.

We always went from Moraira as well but after that we kept the boat in Denia and I would recommend a stay there as an option and cheaper for the berth and easier to get a berth as well, its slightly closer say 5 miles ish?

Denia to the West of Ibiza (San Antonio) would be a little closer but to Formentera it's exactly the same; however when heading from the south Denia is an extra 15m or so further North than Moraira. Should be fine with a berth in June, although worth ringing ahead as they occasionally have regattas.

Hi Roger, try CBSS Costa Blanca Sea School based in Torrevieja. This guys have great local knowledge and have assisted me on a few coastal passage plans.

All the best

Simon

Hi Guys, well made the trip and took your advice which was bang on. Left San Pedro and headed for Moraira. Overnighted there, no probs, a really lovely place. Headed next morning direct across to Formentera.
Spent 2 weeks going around Ibiza staying in bays or marinas. Absolutely brilliant and great fun. Headed back across from Ibiza Town, straight to Calpe. Great trip at 26 knots all the way. Overnight in Calpe then back home.
Really successful first trip, which I am going to repeat at beginning of September.
Thanks for all of your valuable advice,
Roger

Hi, I'm currently in Cartagena and am leaving tonight for mar menors, then torrevieja to see family tomorrow night, we are looking to go direct from there to Ibiza, until reading this I thought was going to be ok, but I will talk to the real captain dan when he gets back, I'm just the cook and cleaner (wife), what dangers are there other than the weather conditions. We are in a 11 m cruise boat, and fairly experienced we have travelled from vigo Spain within the last 2 years.

Have a good trip. I am in San Pedro de Salinas just outside the Mar Menor, which incidentally has had problems. Apparently in order to eliminate jelly fish, they have upset the Eco Sytem, resulting in green algae. Not been there myself, having just arrived but, apparently a place to avoid at the moment, probably for swimming.
Your trip to Ibiza should be ok if you check the weather. It looks to be windier for this week so you might want to track up to Calpe or Moriara, and then across.
We are going across Sunday morning, very early, current weather predictions look ok and we hope to go direct, in a 13 metre boat. If weather changes we shall track up the coast , although the actual time saved is not a lot, if you can cruise at about 30 kn. From here it is approx 109 nautical miles, so 3.5 hours ish. Leave 06.30 there for breakfast.
Have a good trip, we plan to be around Ibiza, which is fabulous by the way and were there in June , for 10 days so message me if we can meet up.
Rgds,
Roger

we've done Denia - Ibiza or Fomenter quite a few times now in our Cranchi 40, always had great crossings, although as someone else commented, it does get choppy around the mid point. we've had great shows from the local Dolphins each time and even turtles!

We are currently in moriera , with water leaking in bilge luckily there was space in marina, I think it's just trickling, but can't tell till light was hoping to leave in morning but not sure if it's gonna happen till Tuesday, have a safe trip. We are on chuck 2, just 2 crew, motor boat, let us know your boat and I will look out for you. Cheers for all your help

Hi roger, well we finally made it here yesterday and are currently sipping a margarita in Cala balas, wow what a journey but well worth it, we plan on cruising round the whole island slowly in 2 weeks, I must say it is absolutely beautiful, I'm gob smacked, no picture could do this justice. As you have done this before already hope you don't mind me asking, is there anything I'm not to miss.

You've picked a great time to be in Ibiza - beautiful weather and so much quieter than August!

A few suggestions :
Formentera - whilst Illetas is beautiful it is very busy these days so you might like to try Es Calo, Es Pujols and Cala Sahona.
There's a couple of great fish restaurants in Es Calo and Cala Sahona is an excellent anchorage

On Ibiza - Cala Xarracca,Porroig, Benirras, the beaches on the West coast and there are a number of small calas on the East and NE coast that are perfect for the day
