First time out of Chichester Marina on my own without instructor.!!!

As long as the depth is OK, most of it is just info that you can decide you need to be aware of or not.

I kept a boat in Chi for a while and it's MUCH easier once you're out of the busy harbour! I'd also suggest motoring over to the IoW (Priory Bay is a good spot as previously mentioned) - it'll do wonders for your confidence and you'll have an amazing day. If it was today, I'd escort you!
hi, I couldn't pick prior bay up on avionics, it kept taking me to bay in Tenby!

Sounds like you have got the skills so next is confidence to leave the harbour and go for it. The bar can be lumpy at times but this Sunday the weather looks decent, head over to priory bay iow, drop the anchor, have lunch and a swim. You and the family will love it. We will be there !
I can't find it on navionics, it keeps bringing up a place in Tenby , even if I put in isle of wight

Priory bay (note spelling :)) gets picked up on Google Maps so you could check it out before going onto Navionics.

I was based in Chi marina for nearly 10 years with a variety of boats, both sail and motor. Great place.

You don’t have to cross the bar. Just enjoy the harbour and practise the lock on your first attempt.

Plenty to see and do without going to ‘sea’

We had our boat there for ten plus years. Great location. That said watching some folk navigate the lock is entertainment in itself. They need some practise on the Thames. And that’s not a a joke.

IMHO leaving the harbour will be easier than staying in. Outside, and heading for the Solent, you’ll have sea room, can easily avoid any racing fleets. Leaving reasonably early gets you out of the way of HISC and the swarms of dinghys, plus of course though the Itchenor moorings before the keelboats get going. Another vote for Priory Bay, we might be there too, scrubbing off.

Yes get out of the harbour and head over to priory bay. You will gain loads of confidence. Sure in the back of your mind will be running over time worrying about this and that, but it’s all about getting on with it and increasing confidence. When I started off the hardest part was returning to the berth pontoon, all the rest is easy going. We will be there Sunday at priory bay with lots of other boats anchored up enjoying our hard earned down time messing around on our boat. Believe in your skills and the boat and enjoy.

thanks guys, for all your advice, as it goes, we couldn't do Sunday as my granddaughter was poorly with Covid, only 6 months old too, but she's on the mend now, so rescheduling now for this Saturday, I've had another lesson since, took the boat to Southsea marina, moored up, and then back to Chichester, everything went well , I have my last lesson tomorrow, (own boat tuition) , and we are going to the isle of wight, so I think I might ask the instructor if we can go to priory bay! thanks everyone,

The weather is perfect for a family beach jaunt. I hope you find somewhere lovely, involving the family in your boating dreams can only add to your enjoyment.

I took the RIB over to Priory Bay a couple of weeks back when we had the roasting hot Friday. We anchored just inside at Bembridge then anchored again at Priory Bay, such a lovely spot and will be great with the predicted weather this weekend. Just make sure the anchor is properly bed in, we dragged and had to reset, more than likely user area than anything else. I did a video here of the day and you can see how nice Priory Bay looks.

wonderful video, great music too, I managed to get to priory bay today with my instructor, he now says I am able to do it without him. So Saturday now will be the first time......priory bay was beautiful, I found it from the paper charts, its was 240 degrees from West Pole, was so chuffed when I got there, and 60 degrees back...! Crikey all these degrees actually work lol!
