As it suggests, we are making the first steps to check out med options.
Having read enthusiastic reports from forumites here, we have decided to head down to Sant Carles over the Halloween break to see for ourselves, if this would suit us and our young family.
We fancy the idea of warm boating, and reckon the best thing to do is take a look for ourselves.
If anyone has experience of SCM or resort / family friendly marinas please advise.
Looking forward to it:o:

A friend of mine is in st carles, he likes it but your boat will suffer from rapid growth there, It is quite difficult to get to as well, try other marinas, i,m in benalmadena south spain, love it, malaga airport is so near and very regular cheap flights.

Reus at 50 miles seems OK to me, we travel about 1 hr 45 min at present.
I will look at other marinas too, Benalmadena looks perhaps a bit more 'lively' which may suit when our children get a bit older? Does it have an inner and outer marina, inner being in the thick of it? Outer being standard marina, no pool etc? It will be useful to check a few options.
I personally like the look of having a bit of a pool and space at the marina, but just like the boat, it is all a series of compromises..

If you want lovely cruising ground just 10 mins away and a marina with dozens of restaurents, lots of chandleries and boat services. A number of international supermarkets. Activities like go karting and sky diving. The marina never dies in winter because of a large resident population.
Downside is prone to winds and very busy in August.
It's Empuriabrava. 1hour drive from Gerona airport. 5500 euros per year for a 37 footer incl all services
Have a look and a google earth view of the cruising grounds

Over the years @ airports waiting for departure when the flights for " Spain " are called or boarding ,( happy to stand corrected ) but it seems to me all the people who wear football shirts ,bear tattoos ,drinking pints , and seem fat stand up and proced to the gate .
I have wondered based on this what exactly these places are like ?
Just a " social " observation really - I realise not PC these days , and I will get flamed for being honest

Class hated, it's gone out of fashion. Even Cameron takes his hols in Benidorm:rolleyes:
The real truth: Nearly everywhere in the western Med has been wrecked with honky-tonk development. Cannes is just full of better off chav's, but chav's nevertheless. A new age of meritocracy has dawned.

I blame the BBC.......

Second Empuriabrava as a choice.Nice folk there, stayed 2 years.Only left because my berth was near the sports complex and being a raggie I could not get under bridges to more sheltered berths.Wake from passing vessels was a problem all too often.Remains a favourite region.A mobo might have a problem too if fly bridge.

There's only one way to know.
Just wear a football shirt, grab a pint, and board the next flight to Palma.
Tattoos and belly will come with the experience - possibly together with drug habits...
...then again, you surely won't be bothered to make these social observations anymore! :D

Well, I'm off in a few hours, once this ink dries, and I pick up my attire at finest gentleman's outfitters, messrs JJB Sports, (airport surely will have one), then once I enjoy a pint or the mobo favorite G&T, (both of which I am sure I can muster), I'm all set.....;)

Unfortunately your 'social observation' reflects what seems to be the majority of the British 'population' and is generally correct…. but as the best cruising grounds in the Med, the Balearics manage to 'shoehorn' them into Magaluf & San Antonio, leaving those who do their boating there to enjoy fantastic anchorages & seas….. try it sometime, you might be surprised!:o

.....With mooring fees allegedly more expensive than St. Tropez.

Thanks for being kind for now - just to clear up some confusion it's mainland Spain ( not Balearics islands) that I reffered to .
Pint - thingy -I like a pint or two too ,but not @ 7.40 AM in an airport .

Great description of my Ryanair journey from Birmingham to Gerona. I don't know where they all go to, but it's not to their yachts on the Costa Brava.
