first rule at sea...

Try telling him he can't steer the front of the boat; he can only push the back of the boat to one side or the other to make the boat point in the right direction and he can only do that by pushing on the tiller.

Confused the hell out of me but it's how a young lady of my aquaintance explained helming to her friend many years ago and it worked again about 30 years later when a friend's 6 year old was getting confused and putting the helm hard over the wrong way when he wandered off course.

My oldest son was about 9 when he backed our Snapdragon out of a marina all the way ... much to the surprise and open mouthed astonishment of various !

At about 6 he was helming us regularly ....

Anyway - 1st Rule at Sea .... for me ?

The Sea is bigger and more powerful than me - Respect it.

"Fingers in the Boat". The first thing that littleuns need drummed in to them when going through our crowded harbour in a rowing boat. When I has a little un I lost a finger nail when it was crushed between the rowing boat and a yawl. It hurt.

What great pictures of the kids doing their stuff.

Eleri with collie reminds me of twenty years passed, when my two were young and the dogs, a collie and two jack russells, often came aboard my long narrow skiff for a ride up the Upper reaches of the Thames.
The collie would try to eat the swans as we passed and often fell in.

I wish I had a grandchild to 'bring on' but no signs yet!

good grief i've heard that a few times from my Dad, not just boating but generally about life!

It's true though, boats are one of those things that everyone (esp not boaty people) thinks looks easy "like driving a car..." etc... If your experienced in your own boat, you can make some things look very easy. When someone tries to copy you, it can all go very, very wrong, but that's another thread!
