First Proper weekend on my boat but shame about the Yacht Club i tried to stay at.

I would go back follow what is said on web site because you may want to use it many times, then scuttle is mirror dingy

With a receipt for a mooring, I would not move in the dark on a poorly lit river under any circumstances, unless my own boat was in danger (e.g. about to be crushed by a returning barge).

I agree completely, there is no way that I would have moved either.

I doubt he is a big cheese at the club, more like a big knob. You had a contract & he really had no right to revoke that, altho I understand your unwillingness to "make a fuss" as a newcomer. Maybe next time you will have the confidence to dig your heels in. Tell 'em you've had too much to drink & wouldn't like to be on his conscience if you drowned. :D

Visitor Information...

It then goes on to give alongside and buoy visitor rates for summer and buoy only rates for winter, so it looks as if they don;t generally have visitors on the pontoon in November. Of course having given the OP a place there they should have honoured it, unless there was a pressing safety issue, in which case they should have helped him relocate.

The RYC is a very small self help club,(no bar:nonchalance:) I've stayed alongside for only a few hours at a time. From memory, their policy is to allow only members of the club to stay alongside at weekends (im not a member). But as the OP was given permission by someone and paid his dues, in my view he should have been allowed to stay.

Completely agree and whatever the rules are the behaviour described by the OP is simply inexcusable.

It is very easy to forget after years of boating and possibly thousands of sea hours under your belt, how daunting it can be to be to have to move a boat in unfavourable and unfamiliar conditions beyond your experience.
Perhaps the grumpy old bloke concerned had forgotton what it is like when you start out boating ?

Thanks everyone.

I have not been put off and I had a great night at the quay with entertainment in the local pub with a bit of grub and a few beers. Got chatting to a few locals and was a great weekend ;-)

Going out in unfamiliar waters at night is something I don't wish to do again anytime soon.

I will be writing a nice polite letter in the next couple of days to them explaining my issue.

I signed a tempory visitors permit allowing me to use all their facilities. Even the officer in charge that day showed me about and was a very polite nice chap.

Thanks

Ian

Hi Ian, great pics on what I know is an old post but stumbled upon it. How has the 2015 season been for you, did you keep the boat or buy that bigger one you alluded to. I like you got my first boat, an 18 footer a couple of years ago and was instantly smitten. The sea has a real draw and I still get excited when I pull away from the pontoon. Anyway hope the experince didn't put you off and that you are still spending time on the water.....

Next time just stay!! Hold your ground!! Take a photo of him as well so you can show us all who Major Arsehole is
