Yes, the SMG does seem to be popular and according to the Beemer salesman attracts a premium over the manual. Its got a kind of launch control which is quite fun but apparently the engine computer records how many times you use it and you can void the warranty if you lunch the engine due to over abuse. I hear what jfm says but I still think I'd rather have the manual. Its worth having a go with the SMG though because many peeps seem to like it
Have you thought about the C32AMG? Its discontinued now but its the ultimate Q car. Does'nt handle like the M3 but it has a ballistic supercharged engine. Autocar tested it at about 4.5s to 60. I had one for about a year but the fuel consumption was a bit scary and the range was about 3 miles if you pushed it a bit
Personally I'm never going to buy another Merc though because I've had so many niggling faults with my E class and the dealer is so f*****g useless so its back to BMW for me and the 535d is top of the wishlist at the moment (unless they bring out a 635d which I doubt). I dont mind an autobox for an everyday car
No M5 never goes to france. Just to the airport. I dont like driving long distances. So it's 4 yrs and 1 month old, and 51k miles
Divemaster is absolutely right. You will hate a 2 door car with baby. Lifting baby into seat, when 6mths old, is backbreaking in a 2 door car, fine in 4 door
Couldnt agree with you more - I dont like the M3 myself, but was just trying to give accurate info!!!
I drive a X3 2.0d Sport. Good for lugging stuff to the boat, the tip and the south of france. Not ever going to win a traffic light grand prix, but it does do 45mpg (I spend enough on petrol using the boat!!!!!!!)
Jez can you get me an e60 M5 very quickly? If yes I'll switch all custom to you. I'm in Bucks.
Current position is I could have had car #1 at my dealer, their demo, May, but they specced it far too low ugh and in that aaaargh blue and yuk nearly white leather. qv tcm's comments re 1980s. Car #2 is August and I'm away July+ August weekends so not much use and will wait till 1/9 plate. Car #3 is mine, September/October.
If you can get me a very high spec May/June I'll bite your hand off. I'll even take a not perfect spec and sell it when my October car arrives
Be grateful for any help. Especially as it might mean I get the car faster than another poster hereabouts, Magnum, whose car is coming in July /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Now you're cheating. Stick to the rules please /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
Im afraid Im far from being a BMW fan and this looks like a Rover 45 thats been tweaked and fiddled with especially from the front. thats not me having a go at the M3, its performance has always been top notch
There is only the range rover sport worth going into the showroom for this year
Sounds good.
Is it March '01 so a Y, or Feb '01 making it a X??
I know you and Alf are probably right, but we would like to try and keep one sencible and one fun car in the family. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
ooh this sounds very tasteful dunnit? I think it needs non-BMW mirrored alloys and a big dent in the rear 3/4 panel where the cops flung one or more of the occupants up against the car during a bust.
Oh that Range Rover, yes i know what they look like, i thought you meant a new shape or something, like i here BMW might be making a Coupe version of their X5 /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
Is there anyone on here in the Know about Company car Tax??
I usually take a company car, reasons being i can usually get a far better car than i would want to spend my money on, and i do about 25k miles a year, of which about 18k are private, so i think i'm better off having someone else pay for running cost and maintaince.
If i were to so happen buy a second hand car, i may concider buying it myself, However am i right in saying there is some reduced tax rate for cars over 4 years old??
No I take your point not a sports car in the same way the M3 is a racing machine but much nearer to a sports car than the Porsche cayenne/ X5 will ever be to a '4x4' -smiley face-
March 01, Y Reg. UK supplied, not import. fBMWsh. Upgraded leather, widescreen TV and satnav etc. Um it's black with black leather so good for drugs work.
The dispensation for cars over 4 yrs old dissapeared a while back so there is no tax advantage to running an older car as a company car
However, it may be more beneficial to own the car privately and charge your company for business mileage at the approved rate which is 40p per mile for the first 10k miles pa and 25p per mile thereafter. Your company should give you a salary increase to compensate for the loss of company car. If you own your own company, then this can be very tax efficient, ahem. The Revenue will require you to keep detailed records of your business mileage though
The company car rules are much kinder for partnerships (don't ask me why) so, if you are a partner in a partnership, it may still be beneficial to run a company car
i have been looking at the 535d series, e class 320 cdi and A6 3.2 tdi quattro, and found the 5 series interior relatively plain and boring, and has sort of put me off. A6 was nice and smooth, with loads or torque as you would expect, but have not driven the others. for me the A6 was the most luxurious inside, aswell as being cheaper. any one got any experience with an A6. what are they like long term?
The 5 series interior (and exterior) put me off as well although you can get a Sport version now which makes the exterior look a bit like the M5 and I have to say looks pretty cool. IMHO, the look of the new 5 is very dependent on colour and wheel size. Insipid colours and small wheels do it no favours
I run a E320Cdi with which I have had loads of minor faults which the local dealer cant be arsed to fix so I wont be buying another one. Somewhere inside this thing there is a good car trying to get out. The 320Cdi is a stonking motor which responds very well to chipping and there is a new V6 diesel engine coming out which is supposed to be very good so dont buy a 320Cdi with the old engine
The A6 is a bit of a curate's egg. On the one hand its good looking in and out and the build quality is very good but on the other hand it still rides worse than the other two and it will depreciate faster as well. Also I think the 4WD system is silly because it robs power and harms economy but I guess they could'nt put all that torque through the front wheels. If this car was RWD it would be a contender
Go buy the 535d and get used to the interior; if you cant, wear sunglasses
