First night on board with the kids....any tips please?

You are so right. We did head out of the harbour for a short time this afternoon, but it was really quite lumpy so went straight back in. Softly softly, as you say!

I was surprised how bumpy it was on Sunday morning between the Forts, even accounting for the Easterly wind running over the tide.
It did settle down nicely later, though.

That will be the wind over tide, I'll bet it settled after the tide turned. It makes a HUGE difference in so many situations, overfalls can go from extreme violence to flat calm (or vice versa) as the tide turns. Well worth remembering.

Me too, considering it was dead calm in Lymington overnight and only light winds in the morning. We went south of the Needles to try and catch mackerel (were there any around this year?), and it was pretty lumpy, even a couple of hours after the tide turned with the wind.

Partially the case, but it was as if the waves were still rolling in from some distance away - it was lumpier than you would expect from the local wind conditions, even accounting for the tide.

Your children will enjoy. I still have amazing memories on staying on my parents Seamaster 813 as a child quite a few years ago!!! As long as you have games and they are warm it will be amazing. Kids put too much emphasis on electronics but they still love adventure!

I must be getting old......

Hope you had a wonderful time.

Thank you Sulley - you are so right, we only resorted to the electronics when the kids started to get a bit spooked by the waves and needed distracting!!

Make that part of the fun, I'll bet they love fairground rides & here they are on their very own. Much of what they experience is taken from your own reactions, so never reveal your own concerns, whatever they are.

Good to hear things are going well. For what it is worth, both my kids play a mean game of chess thanks to rainy boat days! I asked them what they enjoyed yesterday and for my daughter it is fishing/crabbing etc while my son loves jumping off the boat and messing about in the dingy! As others have said, get them involved where you can.

Last summer was brilliant for them as days and nights were spent with new friends fishing on the pontoons or visiting each other's boats. We enjoyed a couple of great night with people we had only just met thanks to the kids!

Regarding bumpy boats, I echo Searush. If you can exude calm, make it fun and take it gently then they will love it.
