First new sail - what are typical payment terms

Hi - I’m buying my first ever new sail for options. Gone through my helpful marina manager who recommended a sailmaker in Cagliari.

Just had the invoice for the full amount requesting a bank transfer on invoice. but they haven’t made it yet. Is that normal?

I’d have thought a deposit for materials and balance after seeing it fitted was more the thing but like I say - never ordered a sail before.

What’s normal?

My last sailmaker in the UK wanted 50% deposit when ordering and the balance on collection.

That's what happened when I bought from Saturn Sails, this winter.
50% to confirm the order and get a delivery slot. The other 50% before delivery.

Yep. 50% before they started making it. 50% when it was ready for delivery.

Same for me, I must have bought 50 or 60 sails, all 50% up front unless it’s been in stock, very occasionally it might be for a one design class.

Same for me 50% to cover the material costs as a deposit and 50% on completion.

RE; a sailmaker in Cagliari.

100% sounds a bit risky to me.
If the sails are delayed or not up to scratch, there is not much you can do after the fact.
If the loft is close enough I would personally turn up and hand over cash.
That would let you see that operation and build a relationship with the sailmaker.

I had my last sails made in Hong Kong (mail order) and it was 100% payment first.
Made me a bit nervous.
Luckily (?) all went well.
