I'm about to fit a new DSC VHF, which is on the boat (which I'm not) so I need to know about the MMSI number, which I've never had before because my old basic VHF didn't need one.

Will the unit have one pre-assigned to it, and do I have to do anything more than make a note of it?

Its a new radio so you will need to register it with OFCOM.

They will allocate an MMSI. All on line and free. You can keep yer old call sign.

Handy to know the latest Mayday that includes both. Wont stop a rescue but big help for Coastguard!

You need to register it with Ofcom.
if you had your old set registered then simply go and update the details with the new set, it will generate an MMSI automatically for you.
If you have never registered before then a quick Google will find the link which you just follow and fill in.
Easy and painless to do.
Be very careful entering the number into the set, I believe you only get one chance on some radios.
Good luck.

Crickey, some fast Typing on here :)
As others have said.

Agree with all above. However this is a tricky bit-the input of the MMSI number. So my advice take it to a reputable dealer and get them to put the number in for you. it's worth a couple of quid.

What's tricky about it? It was very easy on my SH. I guess sets differ in their design and some have poor interfaces, but its just nine digits to enter and save, and shouldn't be any harder than dialling in a station to call.

Just I entered my MMSI on our new SH2100. Easy to do and it has a checking function before accepting the number, you need to enter the nine digits twice and they need to match before it is accepted. Simple but effective fail safe.

Really nothing to it.

Good luck
