First channel trip

I was thinking of staying at one of the marinas. Either cardiff marina or Penarth. Is there an alternative? What sort of costs are there to staying in the marina?[/QUOTE

Stay where you want.
Penarth marina- bit out of the way and not much there.
Cardiff bay yacht club-biggest club. All facilities.Visitors pontoon can get bouncy.
Cardiff yacht club-same but closer to Mermaid Quay.
Cardiff Marina- A bit out of the way but friendly and quiet.
Mermaid Quay-In the open dock next to St.Davids hotel.Loads to do but not sure what its like sleeping in there.
Mermaid Quay main pontoon-Don't think your supposed to stay but we do.
If it were me i would make base at one of the clubs and tootle too and fro for Mermaid Quay.
Cardiff bay YC is probably easiest for fuel/water/hookup etc.

Both the clubs are good. CYC us free, CBYC want £10 per night when they get round to collecting it. Both have showers and CBYC does food most of the time and not too bad either. Bars of course. See no reason for staying at the marinas when there are clubs available.

Personally I would be quite happy with the Navionics iPad app and a recent copy of the Bristol Channel charts (SC5608). This would probably be the cheapest solution.

Make sure you do your research (e.g. you know the VHF channel and 'call sign' for Cardiff Barrage). Have you worked out where you will be staying once you're into Cardiff bay.

Finally, I'm assuming your boat has a depth sounder on it?

Me too, FWIW

I often wonder how many visitors don't realise Cardiff bay yacht club and Cardiff yacht club are two different clubs?
We have a number of people who come to our club thinking it's CBYC. It's easy to remember which is which. Cardiff yacht club is in Cardiff, Cardiff Bay yacht club is across the bay from Cardiff, simples.
