First Aid Box

First aid kit

My wife and I made a list of things that I may of needed, I also made a private appointment with my doctor for his advise. He also had to give me a prescription for anti biotic which I paid for privately at the chemist. (Which, strangely enough was cheaper than the prescription charge).
My wife is digging out the list now. Remember, these are the things that I took on the JAC08, not saying it is a comprehensive list. Everything was placed in a hinged tupper ware box with a list of the contents in the lid.

It would be good if other jester added things we may of left out.

The things I used were:
Re-hydration salts., Mainly for my son on the sail back, he was “ILL” for 13 days
antiseptic cream and elastoplasts. Mainsheet car smashed into my hand (Salty’s fault, hadn’t locked it off).

1 good plastic box with sealable lid (so not to be stuffed to the brim)
Inventory on lid
First aid book
Good sharp scissors (For first aid box only)
Triangular bandage (sling)
Crepe bandages (assorted sizes)
Melolin (assorted sizes)
Self adhesive dressings (assorted sizes)
Bactigras (antibiotic wound dressing) fantastic thing
Micropore tape
Elastoplasts (fabric, not waterproof)
Steri strips (butterfly stitches)
Penicillin (Amoxicillin)
Paracetamol
Ibuprofen
Anti histamine tablets and cream
Burns cream
Cold and flu remedy (day nurse, lemsips)
DYORALITE (Re-hydration satches)
Imodium or similar
Eye bath
Eye pad bandage
Sea sick tablets
salt tablets (Made Salty sick, tee hee)
Needle(s) and thread

Most things can be bought at chemists and Asda.
REMEMBER , if you take medication on a regular basic, dont forget to take enough.

I also took the "The Ship Captains medical Guide" 22 edition. in case I needed to deliver a baby.

Hope this helps

Some of us just carry gaffer tape, aspirin and whisky. A little pair of scissors is useful in a first aid kit if you buy one already set up, for sewing.

My major concern is how do you do CPR when single handed.

Malcome.... did the book give any guidelines as to what should be included in a ships medical kit?

Guy.

Just looked through it Guy and it doesn't tell you what should be in the kit. All it says is that "First aid satchels or boxes" should have at least items required by MSN 1726. I presume these are the portable first aid satchels that can be grabbed on a ship and taken to the patient.
Its a hell of a read though with things in it that you'd hope never to have to do. (bloody expensive though, I think its about £40)
very good section with diagrams of pain in various parts of the body and the likely cause.

Thanks Malcome,

I had a minimal kit with me last year, I could be wrong but just how much can you really do for yourself if you have a major accident?!

Cuts and grazes, bumps and bruises yes, but major breakages?!

Witness Yann Elies in the last Vendee Globe with a broken leg.... it was all he could do to get back to the cabin where he lied in his bunk until rescue.

It is a subject worthy of discussion whilst we all hope it never happens.

Guy.

Helixkimara

Hi ...What was the Doc's attitude regards giving you antibiotics and maybe other prescription meds, like Morphine ?
I see you had Amoxicillin, was it in liquid form and did Doc think this would cover most problems?

Hi,
The Doc said that there was a variety of Anti biotcs for various ailments. He prescribed one (in tablet form) that covered, what he and I thought to be the most likely infection.
He was very helpful as he was interested in my challenge being a dinghy sailor himself.
I never discussed the stronger stuff, morphine etc. I didn’t want it on board anyway (being a roughty toughty Geordie) need to be coherent single handed.

I think you can get morphine and other stuff you wouldn't normally get access to for offshore first aid kits but I'm not sure how. I've been on one boat that seemed to have half a hospital onboard but then she was 80ft and able to carry it all.

Send me a PM with your email, and I will send you several takes on what could be in a First Aid box.

You will have to sort out what you believe is right for you, and the space and budget you have.

We have space, and, because Mrs FC is a Medical Professional, we can do frontal labotomies on the saloon table with our kit.:p
