Firing off old life Jackets

Fascinating thread, really enjoying it earning.

LIFETIME = SHELF LIFE + USEFUL LIFE
After first use this product should last 5 years. Certain environmental elements will considerably accelerate wear: salt, sand and chemicals.
In exceptional circumstances, wear or damage could occur on the first use which reduces the lifetime of the product to that one, single use.
However wear or damage can shorten the product life. Shelf-life of this product in good condition is up to 5 years before first use.

5y shelf life + 5y use = 10 years, interesting, given manufacturer's tendency to under estimate lifespans in order to cover their butts & sell more products too.

Next time I test inflate my L/J's it will be from the folded position to make sure the velcro releases before the seams pop. In the past I have always opened them out before inflating. I just hope my lungs will cope!

Incidentally, in a damp locker under the seats, I have 4 or 5 BOAC manual lifejackets (50 years old? or more?) I might try firing one of them for a larf.

I also have a Beaufort manual that I bought for SWMBO in about 1969/70, it still holds air fine & is designed to be worn part mouth inflated which offers an inflated collar as basic bouancy that allows you to swim or rest without drowning, but won't roll you over. It is fastened by plastic press studs that have would extremely well until one came adrift recently.
