In my infinite mistrust of all things Microsoft, I've turned off the MS firewall and continued using zonealarm

You don't want two firealarms, and when XP service pack 2 installs it should detect if you already have antivirus and firewall, and not activate those components if you do. It's very easy to go into the security console in control panel and turn the MS parts on and off

I'm sure the built-in one in XP is pretty good, just that I'm slightly paranoid about hackers targetting Microsoft, so choose to stay independent.

Yer beat me that time...

Thanks Brendan. I will have a look at that when I get home.
As a matter of interest we have a security thing by somebody called Sygate on all these company machines.
The stipulation by the company for use on the company net was that we put Sygate on laptops and also had up to date anti virus. At one time after SP 2 I had both systems ( Sygate / XP ) active and it worked. Since then the company have thrown their teddy bear out of the cot and booted all the laptops off the net.

Two or more firewall will work together most of the time., It's when they start interfering that they start letting things in. Better off to have one firewall, one antivirus etc etc

Also have a look at http://www.myetrust.com

I should add that I'm totally biased because I work for the company, but might be worth a look anyway.

The firewall supplied with XPSP2 is actually not bad, in a basic kind of way. The main problem is that it only runs on XPSP2... and loads of customers still have Windows 98 or 2000...

Hi!

Agree with Boatless. Zone Alarm is excellent even in the free version. Picks up all sorts of potential nasties.

Cheers

Zonealarm was good up until the last release which has some notable holes in it, give this a try:
