Assuming that your extinguishers not of the disposeable type (heaven forbid), your extinguisher can be checked and/or recharged by a local fire extinguisher specialist to be found in the yellow pages. They will advise you as to the proper maintainence for your type. Scorch .

Unless you are using industrial type/size fire extinguishers. I was told that a £20 fire extinguisher is not worth refilling as you would pay just as much to get it refilled.
So I would dump.

If you have Halon extinguisers, then they must be disposed of properly. Bloody good extinguisers, but deplete the ozone layer, hence the need to dispose of properly. If you have dry powder, then they can be overhauled. Check prices with local supplier, as it may be cheaper to dispose of and replace.

But then again - How are your "Green" views? May cost a bit more to overhaul, but you have done your bit for the environment!

Your choice!

when I asked at the boat show, I think the chub stand at southampton, he estimated about £6.00 to recharge, or did I missunderstand. I am talking about the 1kg type, these I think are the most common size aboard most peoples vessels.

Thanks everyone I'll get the yellow pages out and see if my local fire extinguisher shop can refill more cheaply than replace.
It just seems to me that the container and its mechanicals must be more expensive than the powder ?

I'm all for the enviroment. but with a petrol inboard in a classic wooden boat, my Halon will stay where it is. in the engine bay. (I will try and say nice things to every tree I pass today to make up for it) When Prescott gets rid of his fuel guzzling motor I'll get rid of my Halon extinguisher!

A tree hugger i most certainly am not, but if you have an extinguisher that is better than 99% of other types on99% of fires you would be stupid toget rid of it, the navy, who are definitely not tree huggers still use halon in the engine rooms.....cos it WORKS.........still got three on my boat and they will stay there until they are no longer servicable...this way i'll live to see this hole in the ozone layer.......keith
