Saw load of fire engines heading that way after I left by car yesterday, I rang a friend at Ocean Quay (just downstream of shamrock) who said it looked like a live fire right in the middle of shamrock marina.

Anyone know more? - hope everyone is OK. I'm going down there later will report more if no one does so first.

Ahoy ex-neighbour!

It was actually on your ex berth. I had Shamrock call me yesterday to tell me my boat had to be moved because of a fire. I get the impression it was not huge but will find out more when I go down there in the week.

Arrived just after the fire was put out - we were told that a fire started as a result of a fuel pipe being incorrectly fitted ....

Sorry for the intrusion... any more news? I was at SQ all yesterday morning and didn't see anything (my boats up on the hard). There was a flat fire just down stream by the Itchen bridge yesterday (clicky) was it that or another fire actually in Shamrock Quay?

Edit: Just read Wonky's post... so it answers my question (after the panic of the headline of 'FIRE AT SQ!!!)

There were 2 fires yesterday.......

The one at itchen bridge happened as I was fuelling Evenstar at Itchen marine.
Looked like a car fire the smoke was so black, i'm surprised it was a flat.

The boat that caught fire was a twin engined petrol outboard boat owned by Jim Davidson, the comedian.

Wonky, your boat is over on B pontoon. From C it looked unharmed but I didn't go over to B. The sunseeker the other side of Jim's boat was at the folly when the fire happened and is now right down the end of C.

Thus only the 1 boat seemed effected. It is gutted internally but floating.

Lucky escape with petrol involved I reckon.

No **** sherlock! Most shark bites (on humans) are in water less than 3 feet deep!

(Sorry SR, wide open goal :) )

I'm sorry but your sarcasm is completely lost on me. Are you saying it's because boats spend 99% of their time in marinas, or what? The shark thing is obvious as few people swim out of their depth & therefore feel "safe" when paddling - they also don't understand the way sharks hunt.

Davison's boat caught fire because of a badly fitted fuel pipe - but that supplies fuel, what supplied the ignition? Someone trying to start it despite the stench of petrol?

err yes - most people are in shallow water, most boats are in marinas or yards......

I don't know what caused the ignition, I wasn't there. Rumour suggests it was being refuelled (illegal above Itchen bridge due to a by-law). I've no sense as to the credibility of the rumour. Don't know for sure about the fuel pipe either, all I know for sure is that it burned out.

Back to the original thread - the boat fire - I was there! Last weekend my husband Chris and I were getting ready to depart our berth on pontoon B when we both smelled burning. Chris spotted a boat on the next main pontoon up river from ours was on fire. He called the marina office and soon people were running from all directions with fire extinguishers and managed eventually to put it out (risking their lives in the process as depending on where the heat was it could have gone up like a bomb). They were still in the process of putting it out when the fire brigade turned up (2 engines), but they then proceeded to spend another 10 minutes hanging about doing their ‘health and saftey checks’ before they ventured down onto the pontoon, by which time the fire was out. Not very impressive – if you were watching that little performance from the window of a burning house….! Anyway, we discovered the next day from the guys in the marina office that it was Jim Davidson's boat and that it was an electrical fire. Nothing to do with a fuel line as it had 2 big outboard motors and the fire was well forward of them (fortunately); it started in the electrical panel in front of the wheel. He’d just had some electrical work carried out apparently and was in the pub at the time the fire started - when he came back he thought someone was having a barbecue before discovering the awful truth.
