Fined for antifoul removal?

I make that a concentration of 1 in 1,103,760,000,000 - are you sure about that?

Initiation of imposex (the development of a penis and vas deferens in the female) was observed in dogwhelk at below 1 ng/l (expressed as tin; Sex Change in the Female Dog-Whelk, Nucella Lapillus, Induced by Tributyltin from Antifouling Paints | Journal of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom | Cambridge Core) - with sterilisation I think being almost universal at ca. 10ng/l.

Such a low concentration that I can understand why fisherman remembers the time analogy, and I believe he is right:

1 ng/l = 1 part per trillion = 1 part in 1,000,000,000,000
1 second in 35,000 years = 1 part in 1,103,760,000,000

Near enough - but do check my arithmetic!

I have to say I agree with the idea of yards having to clean up their acts. Ours does not. Few clubs do. They all know it's bad but are just getting away with it for as long as they can, run off going directly into the river, chemicals into the soil etc because of the costs fixing will involve.

Most antifoul agents (e.g. tributyltin/TBT) have undesirable effects on non-target species.

At present, I'm just in denial about it because I have so much else going on but I'm sure it's up there with CFCs, asbestos and worse than single use plastics.

Science links; here.

How are the electro-conductive film layers concepts going?

Not sure about the fine but I know that Mylor are no longer allowing use of the slipway wall for antifoul removal / pressure washing below the waterline. I was booked to come alongside and do exactly this last week and have been told the same several times by the office in recent discussions whilst rescheduling around Covid restrictions.

A real pain but understandable environmentally. It will add a considerable cost for many who now only have the option of a lift out.

Gastropods .

What a great name. Difficult to slip into normal conversation though.

There was talks about banning tbt in the 80's. Globally banned by 2008 ?
Seems you can still buy it in some caribbean chandlers ?
The only antifouling that truly worked but so bad for marine life
Someone else on here who is based in the Caribbean once said that although it said TBT on the can's, it didn't actually contain TBT - that it was a marketing ploy. Don't know if that's true or not!

TBT is internationally banned - not even commercial craft can use it these days. Certainly, any boat entering most countries in the world that was detected to have TBT on the bottom would be liable to be impounded pending massive fines. Small Caribbean countries may, of course, have lax enforcement.

i wish i had any antifouling left on my hull to wash off! 6 years since last painted, the epoxy undercoat is holding up well though despite repeated scrubbings

What about manual scrubs/brushes of slime and marine life? Seems like a little work often is the way to go.

What the last guy left on mine ...

I painted both my boats days before the lockdown . One with hempels tiger extra and one with some old international interspeed 6200.
Tiger extra is useless. Was previous time I used it. The tiger boat does 28 knts but now down to 19. The interspeed is still achieving it's max speed ! Not bad for a £20 for 20 litres out of date paint.
