Final picture of the oil water antifreeze experiment

6 days on and the sludgy layer that formed, when first allowed to stand, at the oil water interface remains . The oil is just beginning to clear from the top.

What's the consistency of the sludgy layer? If it had been dirty oil, might it match the "black plasticky stiff fluid" description in the OP?
