Anyone fancying a transat over December from Cape Town to Carib - use this thread? With the able assistance of C’sensible of this parish i am up to a total crew of 4 but i’d like 5.

Non-commercial non-profit : shared food costs, you get your own flights to from the boat, assembling early next week 1-4th december leaving within that week. I pay all boat costs, marinas, diesel - in other words all the costs i would pay anyway. You pay just the extra costs of you coming along.

Should be a quick trip - this is one of the great downwind passages of the world, and we’re taking it at the recommended time for best weather.

Boat is a 50ft catamaran, a Privilege 495, sorted enough and this is its last leg of a circumnavigation - now all rigged with new spi and K-hook mast attachment point so we’re looking for 200nm a day, if possible. The P495 design is very suitable for big downwind sailing as it has big fwd flotation and extra forestay support from the central “third hull” or “nacelle”.

Wouldn't an extra backstay be more use than the extra forestay for a downwind run? Jack Aubrey was always putting hawsers to the masthead, untidy though it looked, to enable him to carry more sail downwind.

um yes, you’re right. Although Jack Aubrey is a fictional character, so i won’t be copying all his ideas.

Its got a washing machine too. Mostly.

Whaddya mean “mostly”. The latest washing machine is new since Tahiti. Three previous Mo’ washing machines are currently providing undersea refuge and habitation on the seabeds in the Caribbean offshore Anguilla (Whirlpool washer dryer) in the Med offshore Ibiza (indesit washer), and in the Pacific between Tahiti and Mo’orea (Daewoo washer). I am happy to advise on installing washing machine to boat at anchor incl transport of new washing machine in dink, transfering washing machine to boat from dink without dropping in in the sea, etc. etc

not derrick

Nooo! you end up with dangly ooer package in a hopeful knot arrangement.

Much best is first attaching dink fore and aft and then low-level grappling and boosting of the washing machine on to dink and at other end on to main boat. Don’t get a washer dryer cos they are F heavy. In choosing the washing machine - whatever machine that they’ll deliver to the marina, right now - get that one. I think that’s most of it. Is there a washing machine endorsement for YM cos i oughta be given that, really?

There is actually that endorsement available.

Simply return your certificate to the RYA with the latitude and longtitude of at least 3 expired washing machines. Its free too.

Wish I could come - sounds a hoot. I have RYA SDA Handling level 3, which enables me to transport aboard Small Domestic Articles up to and including, toasters, avtex TVs, iPhones, iPads, crock-pots, duvets, Jack Russells etc. Maximum weight on this course is 7kg and the use of pontoons is recommended.

I would so enjoy getting a higher cert. so that I could officially handle washing machines, cement mixers, large dogs, cases of wine etc and the dinghy speciality would be great in case I dropped anything!!

Maybe next year :D

.
I'd love to come but I'd just get a load of grief from twats on here for using aircraft.

No Ollys floating around?

Are you going non-stop or dropping in somewhere interesting on the way?

hurrah, i have found full crew of 5 including me, so many thanks to capnsensible of this parish, and markj and kiltym over on cruisersforum.

Already met two of the crew Scott and Dale, not chipmunks actually, but young ozzie saily/traveller types, very sensible ideas and hopes for the trip, and we had too many beers in the V+A waterfront here in CT. The other two are Phil from Chester UK and Barry from Canada.

So! all ready to prepare for piling along downwind, with maximum skipper lazing about er I mean, sufficient crew to ensure that the watch system keeps everyone well rested, ahem.

Two parasailor spinnakers for this trip, both black with smiley skull and crossbones, one a brand new 188sqm and the other a measly 156sqm one that erm i have alredy blown apart twice, tho that was a separate thing, not a normal spi blowout, the mast fitting broke again. The new thingy at the top of the mast will definitely be able to take some stick, 5mm s/s collar goes halfway round the mast held with with 6 x 10mm set screws, and two metal shackles hold the k-hook which holds the sail.

Bollox Weather Forecasting Corporation (aka Bx, also sometime zefender of this parish) is limbering up for a double helping of this “home” ocean, and i already booked a slot from this thursday. Plan is to go to St Helena for a short stop. I might write a piece for a sailing mag, and see how many people i can encourage to charge off towards S atlantic for summer cruise. Then SXM, so see what’s what from there.

A very welcome vote of confidence from Webcraft further up the thread, and while i am at sea he could be contacted if anyone fancies email copies of the blog entries, easier than going and finding the blog i spose. Incidentally i have sailed a transat with webby and he is completely nice person in real life, not in the least boringly drony bout er unmentionable issues. Actually quite nice here too, tho he does seem to relish a virtual free for all, a bit, so anywaysm i hope you all get along nicely, esp over the christmas and New Year period, hm?
