Fibreglass instrument pod?

Well, that's a good start - and encouraging because I'll soon have a boat with a similar (though less elaborate) binnacle pod. But do the readings (off or on) match up with the rest of the world?

Yes pretty well. Enough to be able to ignore having a compass correction card but then I only use the boat in Greece to island hop. Before I go across the med i think a proper swing would be a good idea!

Glad to hear this is possible. I have a deviation card for KS, and use it when crossing the Channel but don't bother otherwise. But I had visions of the compass on the new boat being thrown way out by the nearby autohelm motor, engine wiring, seatalk bus, etc.

I think that most wheel actuator autopilots require about 1m separation from a compass. Nigh on impossible with a binnacle compass! I have an inboard ram type that acts directly on the rudder quadrant so is well away from the compass. ( and did affect the autopilot fluxgate badly! )

Why? [apart from the price].

Marine ply tends to have a harder surface, so yes, absorbance. Also I have used WBP extensively, and even when used unclad and untreated as a deck in a working boat, wore through before it delaminated. I have to say you need to be a bit picky, some of it is not BS 1455.
