Does anybody have any experience of this or any other product to use as a rust converter/preventer on a cast iron lifting keel (to be painted over!!)

Not used it on a keel, but have de-rusted and protected all sorts of gear, boaty and non boaty, with it and then painted over. A good product.

Worth doing a search on Fertan and/or Keel Rust as have many threads on this topic, e.g. recently <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.ybw.com/cgi-bin/forums/showthreaded.pl?Cat=&Board=ym&Number=412410>HERE</A>.
The concensus is that none of the derust fluids are very effective with rust on thick iron and steel on a yacht. They'll create a crust but the rusting will bubble through again before very long. There is no substitute for proper removal back to bare metal and repriming.
