Re: Daka mows down yacht - whose fault?

[ QUOTE ]
I still own sail as well as Felix, I just dont get to use it that much as the family dont show any interest.
Strangely I can post on scuttlebutts using my sailing profile without rebukes , its just DAKA that gets picked on

Cheers

Well, if you tell me the other profile I'll be pleased to bring my treatment of it and Daka into line.

I just won't promise which one will see the change.....

Tell them that they never have right of way and to piss off some where else. Simple.

Cowes is the 'somewhere else' that certain sailors have been excommunicated to.

Re: Daka mows down yacht - whose fault?

alright I will remove it, it was only meant as a bit of fun but also attempted to convey an important safety message. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

but also attempted to convey an important safety message.

[/ QUOTE ] What was the mesg? When under power, don't turn sharply under the bows of a large vessel? Or just "turn the other way pillock!!" ...

Re: Daka mows down yacht - whose fault?

Dont you guys ever bother to read your charts ?

Have a gander on this chart

this one, zoom in, look where the fairway is and note under the word fairway it says see notes, scan across to the side, zoom in on the notes and decide who is the troll !

rule 9 states narrow channel or Fairway not narrow fairway.

In Rule 9 a vessel proceeding along the course of a narrow channel or fairway is obliged to keep "as near to the outer limit of the channel or fairway which lies on her starboard side as is safe and practicable." The same Rule obliges a vessel of less than 20 metres in length or a sailing vessel not to impede the passage of a vessel "which can safely navigate only within a narrow channel or fairway."

The Cowes bylaws oblige the ferry to enter using the fairway so the ferry can only navigate within the fairway.

Zoom in on this chart and you will see the term 'fairway' clearly written and also notes on the chart which specifically mentions navigation in the fairway which is basically what I have been attempting to convey to you all.

Now you have it in black and white !

Re: Daka mows down yacht - whose fault?

So - now you've completely trashed your previous comment about the whole of the solent being channels and fairways as the Cowes harbour guide has clearly defined Fairway - outside of which the ferry is fair game to any passing sailor no? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: Daka mows down yacht - whose fault?

No because as I said from the start where cowes finishes Southampton and QHM takes over (less the 20m mobos gap).

Re: Daka mows down yacht - whose fault?

QHM says

Avoid sailing in the commercial shipping channels, especially in poor visibility. Obey Rule 9 of the Collision Regulations(ColRegs) for conduct in narrow channels by keeping to the starboard side of the channel and crossing only when this does not impede the passage of a large vessel that can safely navigate only within the narrow channel.

Do not underestimate the speed of ships. If your boat is slow, allow sufficient time to take effective evasive action in the vicinity of large ships.

Re: Daka mows down yacht - whose fault?

again - this is not part of the regulations of the harbour, nor do they form part of the LNTM and are therefore not a legal instruction - they are good guidelines for the approaches to portsmouth harbour though and are backed up by regs on vessels over 150m with exclusion zones - which ferries do not come under ...
