Now we all know it is about as ridiculous as the high way codes equally dated Motor gives way to Horse and we accept it is an obsolete bit of guidance .

Over on scuttleburks they realise the more of these dangerous events caught on camera the closer they get to loosing their perceived right to carry on sailing into dangerous situations.

Oh come on - you can do better than that!! I know it's your birfday n all ... but ... well - those two paras just don't warrant countering!!

Thanks for reminding me what a waste of time it is trying to educate raggies on their responsibilities, I hadnt deliberately got into this to start a conflict and I will retire now from the nonsense , have a sunny, safe season .

Kind regards
Pete

...I blame it on Deleted User's polite and descriptive subject line..;

Ferry nearly mows down yacht - whose fault?

where as Chrusty has gone for the sensationalist and crude subject line of

What a dick head!

...maybe it tells us something about how polite us Mobo owners are..but certainly What a dick head! pulls in more punters!! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Maybe I should be head of marketing then???

I know a lot of the X boaters personally having met many at the annual dinner last year in Yarmouth, I am awaiting an email with the full details of what went on, I will pm you as soon as I find out.

I did know quite a number of them - meeting up with them for thursday night racing - usually around a mark .... I'm positive none of them are called "Starboard" ... as they didn't respond when called .... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

As a mbo owner of only 3 years, but I would like to think a reasponsible one as I am working through the RYA training scheme ie Day Skipper...etc... I have yet to have a close call with either a mboer or raggie because like another said, as a small mbo, it's pretty much our job to get out of most other vessels way!!

But, I would love to know why in my experiance (and like I say it's limited to only 3 years) but each and every time we leave or enter Portsmouth I always have to give way to a sail boat who is in the small boat channel, using his engine (as he must) yet has no intention of ever giving way?? Various situations have developed as they turn for the inner or outer swashway channels, but whenever it's my right of way, it's completly ignored!!

Yet last weekend we was returning to Portsmouth and using the Swashway channel, when I found myself head to head with the Fastcat. Now valuing my wifes and childrens lives, not to mention colregs, I made a correction to starboard so the Fastcat could hold his course in the narrow channel. No sooner had my nose started to swing, but he to made the same correction to his starboard......It amazed me how he was obviously treating my vessel with respect and we gave each other a large clearance along with a nice wave which made my 5 year olds day!!!!

I'm not saying mbo's are perfect because I could list many stupid things I have seen, likewise I have come across many polite and knowlegable sailors but there does seem to be a general thinking that a sailing boat has right of way no matter what the situation.......

Regards Paul.

Is it not time the col regs were changed, to make it perfectly clear, that little sailing dinghys never have right of way.

I think it's the only way to tell the prats, to keep out of the way.

Ahh yes - but he's probably a member of the Royal Yacht Squadron and thinks it doesnt apply to him. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Raggies rarely bother to display their motoring cone when under power, so you see nobody actually knows their engine is on. Thus they expect all mobos to get out of the way. Ingenious eh. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif The only flaw they haven't figured out yet is we can see them moving with no sail up /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Personally, I go on the water to get away from the stresses of life and generally try to avoid getting into close quarter situations, though not always sucessfully it must be said.

This just in....

Cowes Harbour Master, Captain Stuart McIntosh confirmed that he had received the incident report and was awaiting a further submission from the yacht club that had organised the race. He confirmed that the ferry would not come under the Solent's 'MPZ - Moving Prohibited Zone' which requires all vessels to stay 1,000m clear ahead of any vessel over 150m long (Red Falcon is only 93.22m long). But he indicated that IRPCS Rule 9 - narrow channels - would most likely be the pertinent rule in the investigation.

If they have no sail up they are not required to show the cone as they are considered a power vessel.

If they have the sail up and are under power (motor sailing) they are required to show the cone and are considered a motor vessel but very few do.

[/ QUOTE ]What you surely must mean is "in the Solent..."....

In the rest of the Uk we've maintained this grand thing called 'tolerance'.... would you believe we even have mobers and raggies that enjoy one anothers company and swap trips on each others boats..... remarkable huh?

/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Don't really understand why you central southern UK folks insist on antagonising one another......

Edit: Gludy - yes indeed so. I was thinking motor-sailling when I typed the post, but then my last comment is daft. D'oh. This is what happens when taking a break from creating software installation packages with a frazzled brain.

I've seen the map and I saw the incident - it happened within the red area of the map which is under the jurisdiction of Cowes HM, who is conducting the enquiry. Still nothing to do with QHM.
