Sound signals would certainly help,

Well I am wondering if that would be so. Last summer we crossed the channel from Poole on a Condor fast ferry, and we were aware that just a little later that day one of our fellow boaters from Cobbs Quay would be following us on the same route over to Cherbourg.

We ran into fog, as far as I recall our boat was sounding its horn. But I remember thinking, "supposing I was in that boat behind, and heard the horn some direction on my tail". How would I know where roughly it was coming from, so where can I turn to get out of its way?.

Academic actually, as there would not have been another fast ferry around, but our friends did encounter the fog, and the crew later told us she was absolutely terrified.
