The Plymouth - Santander ferry was hit by a rogue wave off Ushant which broke windows and injured 5 people. The ferry put into Roscoff.

Bit early for the hurricanes isn't it?

I heard somewhere that the meteorologists who correctly forecast last year three major hurricanes are this year forecasting five.

Is this sport getting dangerous?

Arrest that wave and give it an ASBO

[/ QUOTE ] - A very good question . . . average windspeeds seem to have increased in the past ten years, with most people now regarding a forecast of 4-5 as a good sailing breeze whereas ten years ago many would have had a day in port and waited for more temperate conditions.

Similarly, there seem to be more Summer gales than before in UK waters, while tradewind Atlantic crossings seem to be reporting more unpleasant conditions and fewer steady trades.

But - I also have the feeling that there has been a seasonal shift of a month or so, with Summer beginning earlier and ending later - at least here in Scotland, don't know if it is the same for the rest of the Atlantic seaboard.

The radio said the wave was 40 ft. The captain reckoned it was one of those statistical rarities, not quite the 100 year wave but same principle.
