Ferro Cement Sailboats

A true story...years ago a mate of in was at a cocktail party and got talking with an Admiral(RN)As my mate was into yachts he asked "how do concrete boats float"

You will find me in there somewhere... I posted about two years ago!
It was good to take another look. The thread started with sometimes trenchant views about the merit/demerit of ferro as a boatbuilding medium but has now evolved into something more useful with some interesting experiences.

I think the admiral was pulling a leg. The RN was a pioneer of concrete craft. There were not enough yards able to produce lighters for D day and there were hundreds of cargo lighters made and used. Also ammunition barges , which had been wood lined, were made of concrete. to avoid sparks.
There was a concrete yacht made on the Medway by a professsor of concrete engineering. It fell to pieces and was abandoned, so becoming a hazard to navigation.
I have seen some excellent concrete boats. Some made at Wroxham were used as charter boats in the Windies.

I used to fish in a ferro boat from Plymouth, we fished the wrecks out past the eddystone, it was a great boat, called the Boa Pescador, around 33/35 Ft long with a single Volvo engine. I think 9 knots top speed. It was a long time ago, most of you were not even thought of.! I remember it was very quiet and stable.
