Well I think I now own the S34, I have several bits of paper anyway ! Just in case I do I need to protect her and would like some advice on fenders.

a) I like blue fenders (with a blue canopy of course), just wondering if these are the boating equivalent of go faster stripes on an '84 1300 cc Escort.

b) why should I need the flat (G series fenders) on this site ? They mention a sort of anti roll property but the way I bang against the pontoon thats the least of my worries.

Any advice would be welcome.
Tony

Blue fenders rubbing on white gelcoat, eh, Tony? I think not. Get cheapy white ones and fit fender socks, then they won't mark the hull. Don't buy the posh fender socks, either, but look in the back of MBM. There's a crowd does the stuff on a roll - it's far cheaper, and it lasts longer.

May i suggest some inflatable emergency ones. 2 big round ones in case you are ever in the doo doo as the oyster below was in falmouth. They collapse so they can be stored and got out when needed. may save you a fortune. fenders that day were at a premiuim the boat i was in burst four. the local shop opened up especially even tho it was sunday afternoon late.

wind got up and this six week old boat burst ALL its fenders on the ponton
only man power and a borrowed fenders held it off the pontoon prevented damage.

Disagree, tcm. You can tell the age of black fenders by how many marks they've left on the hull... Also, you look like a trawler. Remember to add lobster pots and fish guts for authenticity.

they leave marks? But but blue fenders don't leave blue marks. And white ones don't leave white marks on a blue hull. They aren't tyres.

Mind you, i haven't gottem - they put white ones on and black fendersox. But think i will try just the one and report back.

<font color=blue>Tony, buy your blue fenders mate, they look better longer, do NOT mark your hull and if they fall in with your boat's colour scheme then there's nowt wrong with that. Now! Fender socks are bad news. They wear out rapidly, hold every bit of grit which they happily grind into your hull. Last but not least have you ever seen anything tattier than a row of Fenders all holey and ragged where they have worn through against the pontoon.

Ah, but he's got a Sealine, and they only do white hulls. And I agree with Byron, the posh knitted socks fall apart, but the cheapo 'buy it on a roll' ones don't. Mine are into their third season shortly, and they're fine.

Byron! How dare you accuse me of terminological inexactitude, Sir! I, and only I, am the King of all Fender Knowledge. I have ordered a fender. I have spent the last four years researching fenders, fender technology and fender deployment techniques. I have had my wife shipped to a small fishing community in Greenland for four months to learn traditional Inuit fender skills, as well as seal fishing. I have read all available worldwide fender specification, construction and use documentation.

And when I deign to share this wealth of hard earned knowledge, you had better believe me that it is correct!

Anyway, how are fenders supposed to grind grit into your hull, when they're on snap davits, and you only launch them to go ashore?

Those flat fenders seem like a good idea but the yacht that is moored next to us found they weren't any good because as soon as the wind gets up they blow up over the pontoon!! I'd say stick with the traditional white ones.

Fender Stains

All I know is that I was rafted up against another boat in Yarmouth last season which was sporting 5 brand new fenders with a blue band around them. In the morning I had 5 nice blue stains on my topsides.Fender socks are indeed the height of naffness and tear easily anyway so dont bother with those
As well as the usual sausage shaped fenders I've always found a couple of big round fenders very useful as well particularly for rafting up and mooring against walls.

Re: Plastics expert required

ah ,but with a blue band, doesn't that mean that they are white plastic, then painted or whatever with blue? whereas solid blue (or black) ones are less prone to rub off their colour?

Re: Plastics expert required

Could be but all blue or black ones may be painted as well. As you say we need a fender style guru to advise
BTW, dont your big black ones heat up in the Med sun and eventually explode?

black things in hot countries

Contrary to the receieved "wisdom" hereabouts, I have not seen black cars burst into flames, nor is light-coloured sand much cooler than dark-coloured ground.

Re my fenders, I did ask for black, whereupon they supplied white and put black fendersox onnem. So this is inconclusive.

Fender care

When it comes to fenders they've just got to be white.

Clean all the crud off the fenders each year whilst the boat is ashore (I used to do this in the kitchen sink, much to the wife's annoyance).

Buy a new set of sox every year. Stick the old worn ones in the washing machine (or sneak 'em in with the clothes). Replace old sox then put new sox over them, this prevents uneven wearing.

Stick the tails (and warps) in the washing machine as well.
