Which type of fender is better for permanent mooring alongside a pontoon on a mid river mid river mooring subject to swell from passing boats and swell on strong ebb with wind over tide. Currently using 9 and 10 in dia sausage fenders. Boat 4 ton long keel yacht GRP.

I used cylindrical on mine which was very similar set up to your description ( although boat is an AWB) WOrth looking at also fitting some permanent fenders to the pontoon itself, fixed at both ends and oriented horizontally as opposed to the normal vertical. That way you have fenders in place wherever.

I donlt think it really makes much difference though, it the width and position that counts

I think it depends very much on the shape of the boat. Mine is pointy at both ends, and I find the sausage shaped ones in the middle plus some biggish pear-shaped ones nearer the end work well.
