I managed to puncture two new fenders on recent cruise dhhh - one over the heater vent , and one by starting the outboard on its pushpit bracket and slicing the nearest fender. SWMBO wasnt well pleased as they were a recent purchase....

Anyone punctured more and in what unusual situations .... ?

Ive tried the hot glue repair and the hot knife solution , any other bright ideas before I reach for the wallet ?

I've got a rather large melted scar on one of mine. Fired up the Eber ashore having forgotten that I'd shuffled all the fenders into the very corner of the cockpit locker. Still works but I'm forever expecting it to go bang sometime.

Rest easy , when mine burst it was just a small whoosh and then a soggy fender , no spectacular pop or bang all rather a letdown really

I've lost one because it was loosely tied and on the way back the water was a little rough so it kinda bounced itself free.. Not punctured any..

Punctured fenders can find a new life as protection from mooring strop shackle and thimble, cut em in half , cut the eye off and slide down strop.

Plank

I've not punctured any, but my ex-boat partner managed to lose 8 in the last 3 years.

Were these failed man overboard practice subjects, or knotting failures ?

We do a bit of fender hunting/recycling when were cruising on the West coast (Scotland) - binos watching the shore and then when a likley ex fishing creel float is spotted, swoop in the Dinghy to recover. Picked up two this year ,Orange but great for fendering in the canal and when alongside a harbour wall .

Never punctured one yet, but have had 3 nice new ones pinched a few years back whilst we left the boat on a town quay. Came back to find only one fender left on the rafting side. First, I blamed myself for not securing them correctly, but I reckon they were nicked.

Haven't ever bought a fender in my life. Got some with the boat and the rest have been beach finds from walking the dog.

Unfortunately dogs also puncture fenders. The only one I've lost so far was when I used one to buoy an anchor and somebody's dog swam out from the shore to try and get it, ended up putting teeth right through it!

Certainly not the former. He tended to sail with 10 people on board of varying ability, so probably the latter. He paid for replacements, but it was always me who had to get the new ones to the boat, then paint on the boat name.

So whats everybody's favourite knot for Fenders ? I favour a clove hitch but with the tail looped through I thonk its called a steersman knot , anyway its fairly quick to release . Im guessing round turn + 2 1/2 hitches might be another ....

If you found a fender with a telephone number written on it, would you keep it or phone the probable owner?
