Fender sizes - what does 8x27 mean

I thinking about buying some more fenders. The current ones have 8x27 written on them, would anybody know how this translates into notional diameter and length?

Good point. I pumped up a couple of slightly soft ball fenders not long before I left Scotland and they were perfect. A couple of years on in Spain and I still have a little trouble putting them back in the locker. They come out easily enough (just) but it's different when putting them back after a few hours in the blazing sun.
