Fender Bung

I have an inflatable mooring buoy that had a persistant leak from the inflator valve, and couldn't see a way to repair it so as a last effort I re-inflated and filled with epoxy and sellotaped over the top temporarily whilst it set,- no more leaks, still full of air and its been 18 m0nths since I did it. Try that first before scrapping the fenders.

P.S. You might find that the ends of a ballpoint pen of the Bic type may fit and tap their own thread as a bung.

I've lost two bungs that seal the valves on my fenders, so they keep going down. Can you buy these bungs ? Is there an alternative or is it new fender time ?

I don't recall ever having fenders which rely on the "bung" to stop them deflating if the valve is leaking, they have only had them to keep seawater out from corroding the valve. But maybe such do exist.

In any event the few times we have had fenders were the valve has started leaking the leak has been stopped by inflating the fender then squeezing some silicon grease down onto the top of the valve and then a few more pumps so the grease gets pumped through the valve.

If your fenders are from a name manufacturer then you may be able to get replacement "bungs" from them otherwise a solution to keep water out (assuming that is all the bung does in your fenders) may be to cut some closed cell foam and "screw" that tightly into the hole.

I have had similar good results with hot-melt glue and gaffer tape and was able to succesfully fill the hole where the valve used to be. The fender isn't rock-hard, but still usable as a dinghy fender.
