Feeding seals in the Medway by hand!

.... my kids would have given their right arm to do that!!!!!

That could happen if the seal had nipped James fingers when grabbing that fish......once they've tasted human blood they won't eat fish again....

You'll never be able to dip your toes in the water off the back of the boat again!

I'd be interested in what you use for bait. I bought some Mackerel feathers but I haven't tried them yet.

I'm about half a mile up river from Folly Point and often have a seal lift his head up when I'm rowing across the river but never as close as that.

You have to be very careful feeding seals as if they bite you it is very serious. They carry a disease in thier siliva that causes swelling and joint pains and requires a specialist antibiotic to be administered quickly after any bite. Saw this on a program about rescuing seals, so please do not hand feed them.

i would go further than that, don't feed them full stop.

We are less paranoid about seal welfare than some Continentals, who won't let you sail within half a mile of them, but I think that generally, wildlife is best left alone. Seals are unlikely to be short of food and feeding them may encourage them to approach boats and risk injury from props. A woman in Rowhedge was quite rightly prevented from feeding swans a few years back and numerous people seem to want to feed wild animals, such as the duck and goose-feeders I see at Layer Breton. I suppose they think the animals are going feel grateful in some way. On the other hand, I think many of us would have felt tempted to feed the seal shown, having just landed a fish.

We had a distressing interlude last year, It started as an amusing interlude, then we realised that the pup was in danger of being abandoned by mum.

[Having problems posting a video from Photobucket; can someone remind me how please?]
