When working as an Island Cruising Club skipper back in the 1970s I once played a tape of the slow movement from Beethoven's violin concerto and it was received with complete silence during the playing and after with much appreciation from the members whose ages ranged from teens to 60s.
Since then I have often played some of my favourite classical recordings to a wide range of crew and guests and all seem to enjoy the calming effect this music has, even in rough weather.

1. Mozart piano concerto No 21 (Elvira Madigan)
2. Beethoven violin concerto (Thomas Zehetmair's recording)
3. Mendelssohn's Capriccio in E minor
4. Czerny's Divertissement Op 204
5. and for a bit of fun, Lumbye's Copenhagen Steam Railway Galop

fo - f2 Ministry of Sound Chilled Tracks or again Spanish Guitar Music
f2 - f3 jazz and lots of it (Stan Getz/Dave Brubeck)
f3 - f5 Beethoven/Vivaldi
f5 - f7 Wagner/Led Zepp
f7 - Anything as long as its loud :)

1. 5th piano concerto - Beethoven
2. 2nd piano concerto - Shostakovitch
3. Clarinet concerto - Mozart
4. Enigma variations - Elgar
5. 6th Symphony The Pastoral - Beethoven

On the way out to the start line when racing its was always Guns 'n' Roses "Welcome to the Jungle".

Ordinarily I discourage music when sailing since a great part of the pleasure is to engage with the natural environment.

I do, though, have a regular sailing partner who insists on plugging his iPod in whenever aboard. Two summers ago it was Bluegrass, last summer modern female country, this summer undiscovered guitar players (after two days storm-bound in Fowey and knew exactly why they remained undiscovered).

I think it's time for Mrs Mist to expand her horizons
1. too overplayed. If you want a piano conc. try Scriabin 1st
2. another concerto? If you must, try Vaughan Williams' tuba conc.
3. and another? If Wolfgang is appropriate, maybe the piano/wind quintet for a change of texture.
4. I haven't heard Falstaff lately, have you?
5. you want a symphony; get all the fun from Nielson's 5th.

Mmmm I listen to a very wide range of music. The pieces mentioned are ones I especially like. They are popular, well loved pieces, but that's for a reason don't you think? I could also have chosen the Flute and Harp concerto by Mozart, for a change. I also love many of Beethoven's cello sonatas, I have the Jacqueline Du Pre recording. A well as these aforementioned composers I love Baroque, especially Bach, Albinoni, Vivaldi, Scarlatti. I also enjoy Sibelius, I like his fifth symphony and his violin concerto. My musical horizons are well expanded thanks. Music is an extremely personal thing don't you think?

I have played all your top five to death... I actually hate 'Automatic for the people' with a vengeance now, which is a massive shame as it is a fantastic album.

My ipod listy

1. Almost every bar one or two episodes of ISIHAC
2. Every episode of Dad's Army

ok, but these and my other collections of R4 drama and comedy are brill on passage.

1. Led Zep II
2. Captain Beefheart, Safe As Milk
3. Crosby, Stills & Nash, Carry On
4. Hothouse Flowers, Songs From The Rain
5. Massive Attack, Mezzanine

This is a very fluid list, I am a sad record collector, but these were what I was listening to last summer, next year will prolly be quite different other than Led Zep II which is my all time fav album ever!

I love Songs From The Rain, what an underrated album. I also have Zep II, which is another favourite.
