\"fastidious\" owner

Has anyone noticed that about 50% of boats are owned by owners who claim to be "fastidious". They can't all be as fastidious as they claim, because the word itself surely implies that your attantion to detyail is extreme. If everyone is fastidious, then nobody is, really.

I admit that i have a winter over-cover to protect the canopy and spare old winter fenders, which i reckon is fairly fastidious. I also nearly asphixiated no#2 sone by sending into the fwd hatch to clean it with bleach and make it new. Ok, i also paint the bilges every year. Perhaps there is a point at which "fastidious" becomes "sad git"

hm, the counter always shows the current count, not the count as it was when you made that post. So you cannot find your 5020th post, afaik, and all posts show the same count...

Very Dickension

Excellent, does he do chimneys as well?

Re: \"fastidious\" owner

I always prefer not to contribute, unless I can add value.

I am, indeed, highly fastidious, to the extent that, after three years, I still haven't replaced a shabby cosmetic line along the topsides because I can't find a replacement for it. I haven't looked yet, mind you.............

Re: \"fastidious\" owner

Surely an obsessive compulsive would be at the pinacle of this group. I would assume an obsessive compulsive could charge 5% above the going rate for their boat.....?

Re: \"fastidious\" owner

The true definition of 'fastidious boat owner' is the one who whilst relaxing on anothers boat - belts back to his own and returns with some super stuff and brushes etc and then cleans his hosts' teak decking whilst asking all the SWMBO's to move their feet so he can clean around them.

Very megga fastidious

Re: \"fastidious\" owner

sounds like a lunatic.

Or had he beeen drinking? Sadly, a large number of mobo skippers on the south coast simply don't look after crew and visitors on board in this regard and you'll find them involved in all sorts of collisions etc. Tsk.

Re: \"fastidious\" owner

or is that 50pct of boat owners with the boat up for sale....
I looked at a boat last year, and this guy brought a new meaning to the word fastidious... to the point you wondered why he had a boat at all. Well, he was trying to sell it, I suppose.
Anyway, when I made an offer, he put his asking price up ! Guess he didnt want someone causing any wear and tear on his precious boat. And maybe if you are fastidious by nature, boating just isnt for you. Too much time spend rushing around mopping up spray; ohh, slow down, I can see a wave;best stay here at the pontoon where i can have a splendid day polishing and valeting.

Re: \"fastidious\" owner

As an observer from across the pond, I think many US boat owners are in the mega fastidious league. People (not the owners) come to wash and clean their boats weekly, divers clean the bottoms monthly and another crew polish and wax quarterly. In contrast, apart from newish ones, I've never seen a shiny boat in a UK marina, and there's certainly not the level of "boat care" activity which is constant here - but perhaps I haven't looked hard enough.

Re: \"fastidious\" owner

From what I read on US forums I think you're right Arthur. They also seem to change their oil every five minutes.

Re: \"fastidious\" owner

Every 100 hours is the norm, but they do seem to a bit obsessed by oil changes even in cars where 3000 miles is the norm, but I think that's the oil companies making money off gullible folk. However, I wonder if many of the bigger boats here do more than 20hr/yr. They are actually floating condos which are cleaned and polished fastidiously!

Re: \"fastidious\" owner

There are degrees of fastidiousness and "Fastidious-for-Purpose" elements to consider.
For instance I am fastidious about a boat I don't use. The Heron lives in the garage and I take it into the drive and clean it, vacuam the inside (really) and take the sails out of the bag and hang them on the eaves of the cottage to air them. I even dust the trailer.
The boat I sail gets a few buckets of water and a deck-brushing now and again.
The tender gets no attention at all.

Re: \"fastidious\" owner

When we purchased our boat, I was quite impressed with the fact the owner wrapped all his internal chrome in tissue paper so as to stop it getting damp or rusty. When we first saw it I with paper everywhere thought something major was wrong, but the kitchen had the most perfect and shiny chrome..and every carpet had an over carpet (which sort of defeats the object but..) and every mirror had kepts its silver back because he cleaned the edges regularly (amount of boats we saw where the silver backing was starting to erode)

Also non of his kids could wear belts in case the buckles damaged the cherry finish...I think I purchased it at that point before we had even taken a sea trial

Is that Fastidious?
