On our way between Salcombe and the Eddystone this am we went through a fleet of about 50 yachts all slowly plodding S.W. No national ensigns were visible but there were a variety of nationalities according to the sail nos. Would this have been The Fastnet ?

Placed a lifejacket order with my supplier last night and got a text confirmation from the Fastnet. That's what I call repping in style.

Re: No

Ok! Well done! That is a mildly amusing response. I get confused you see - was coming back from Falmouth one misty day and espied what looked like the Eddystone with waves crashing against it. Checked the chart and the respective bearing was about right. Was somewhat surprised to see it get rapidly closer - it was only blowing about a 5 - turned out to be the conning tower of a nuclear sub which started to submerge as it went past. Couldn't see it marked on the chart at all!

On strange sightings

Like the time coming back from Cowes to Hamble in fog, buoy hopping up Soton Water, when we were relieved to see the top of the chimney at Calshot, although the posn looked a little strange. Fog does play those sort of tricks. But then the chimney started going ahead of us, which as we were motoring with the tide under us seemed a little odd. Slowly it became clear that we weren't lookong at Calshot chimney, but at the exhaust stack of a large ship, sticking out of a red funnel. Not just any old large ship, the fog became patchy, and the QE2 was there, about 100 yards away.
