It seems that farm run off is not the only problem with water pollution. Chemical pollution caused by prescription drugs is also widespread.

Indeed. I've worked on papers about water purification, and some widely used prescription drugs, or their breakdown products, are quite important pollutants - contraceptives, over-the-counter painkillers, NSAIDS - even antibiotics. They are also not very easy to break down.

The amount of contraceptive drugs entering the water system is affecting the fertility of fish. Should we ban contraceptive drugs? If so, the resulting rise in population may be even more harmful to the environment.
Indeed: this story has been around for 30 years. So much of it is just excrement.
