Farewell from Simonjk weatherman? Signature too commercial?

Hi everyone,

Laura responded very quickly to this and for that she get a hearty 'well done'.

It's good to see so many of you supporting what I do on the forum. I do try not to make it too commercial, but as I said earlier, I do need to make a living!

However, my priority has always been, and always will be, to both enhance the weather knowledge of sailors and to provide as much forecasting information as I can.

Your response to this thread has been overwhelming.

I would ask you to keep posting to the thread as when the issue is raised again (which it certainly will be) I can refer YBW back to this thread, thereby saving much extra work!

No response from YBW about my 'weather page' idea yet, but I'm ready to go for it when they are ;)

Once again, thanks to you all for your support.

Simon

Now Simon ,after all this support how about a bit of decent sailing weather? :D

Hi all,

Your feedback has been noted. I'm happy for Simon to retain his signature because everyone seems keen for him to keep it as it is.

I did explain this to Simon when the thread was started, but I wanted to let everyone know that we do listen to what you say ...

Thanks,

Laura

Thanks for that. Glad to see common sense prevailing.

I just want to add, on the record as it were, my total support for and appreciation of what Simon does on this forum.

Well done Laura-good shout.

This is a sad state of affairs. the postings from Simon are an important safety issue. They are also extremely educational. Poor show from YBW

Ok I will bite....why is it a poor show?

We had a complaint and we had to act on it, there is a very fine line between a commercial and personal link.

On this occasion (clearly) it was felt that it should stay.

But the fact remains if someone complains we have to look into it.

To add we do indeed have a commercial arrangement with a weather agency.

Only doing our jobs..

TBH, I do not use your forecast that much, though I have enjoyed learning quite a lot from your free offerings. Nevertheless, it is bonkers that the Mods have chosen to unilaterally renage on their agreement.

I suspect that Laura has once agian been caught out by reacting to "complaints" (who could possibly complain about a free service?) without understanding or knowing the back ground.

I want Simon's exception to stand & him to be allowed to continue with his service & his very low key "advert".

Perhaps the complainant would like to offer a similar free service to yotties so that he can display is own "commercial" link too?

Edit: Whoops, for once I didn't read to the end of the thread. Well done Laura & YBW for meeting the needs of your readers/ contributors.

Interesting? I will take a look out side of that I was trying to point out to some on here (not you obviously!) that despite our commercial arrangement we are happy to have Simon on here.

Nah; not used theyr since there was the company split and IIRC theyr.net appeared and there was a dispute re who was the real theyr (circa 2004?). Just thought I'd look at who your sponsored weatherman was.

Now if Simon could get some of the TV weathergirls on video to talk us through his forecast then he would be onto a real winner:rolleyes:

I haven't chosen to "unilaterally renage" on any agreement, and I'm sure Simon will back that fact up. I thought we'd established in this 12-page thread that the signature is staying...

Unfortunately I don't know the ins and outs of everything that happened in the forums before I began working here. In any case, this issue was cleared up with Simon before the thread had started.

I find it strange that anybody on here would complain about your signature Simon. I think that you should be allowed to continue without change.

Well.... I am going to bite on this one.

I don't have a issue with the normal practice of a person having a link in their signature back to their business... If there is a reciprocal arrangment.

What i do have a issue with is if someone comes on and goes ott with that signature... Or if they do nothing more than use the forum as a channel to boost their business...

My concern of late has been that Simon has not actually been posting his weather forecasts here on this forum.... But instead simply putting a notification in the forum that a new forecast is available, and then putting a link into his website.

Occasionally we will get a warning of something big.... But in reaity his postings are no longer what they were two or three years ago when he would put a synopsis of his forecast on here, with links to more information.

So, i will put my hand up and say that i did bring this up a few months ago, and i think that a commercial business using this facility to drive traffic to their site, is actually not a good thing.

There are many goods and services of use to us as sailors which could be treated the same way... But which rightly would not be premitted.

I will say that i rarely look at the forecasts linked to by Simon, whilst the quality may be high, I can get the information I need for free without sitting through a five minute video.... And if i am on the boat a video is useless.

I am happy for anyone to contribute to this forum, commercial or otherwise, however I think that there needs to be a contribution into the forum as well as a take from... And i do feel that Simon has not been contributing as he did a few years ago, and his posts have now become simply a way for him to drive traffic, without actually contributing anything here on the site.

I would be much much happier if Simon were to post a synopsis for us of his forecast here, with more information available via a link.

I think in fact, that his forecasts, without a synopsis are disseneguous.. As who has the bandwidth on a mobile device at anchor to open yet another link and view a video?

Well despite the post from photodog I will give another vote of support for Simon.
And thanks you for your informative and interesting posts in the past! Met is one of the subjects I always feel inadequate about! (Perhaps I should book myself on one of your courses!)

I hope the YBW management change their minds about the whole business.
