Farewell from Simonjk weatherman? Signature too commercial?

That is a shame Simon, perhaps some kind of compromise may be found that will help you to provide the service for the benefit of the YBW Forum members. I have always found your forcasts very informative, long may they continue.

Unbelievable when you see some of the commercial links on here.

We have always found your videos to be an essential part of our long term passage planning and would be very disappointed to lose them.

Interesting that they have received complaintS about weather forecasting on a boating forum !

Would they accept your signature with "Autumn 2012 courses booking now" removed and would that be acceptable to you? After all your URL does tell the story.

Perhaps YBW should name and shame the complainers!

I know and use your services because of the is forum. It is very usefull and i would miss your posts. If it were me I would post without the commercial link in the signature. If that is all thet the complaint is about. It is a valuable service and most will go to find your site without the link in your signatiure

I understand a competative organisation being unhappy if you are allowed to something that is prohibited for them. Equally nobody else post weather informtion commercially or from the kindness of their heart.

I am against blatant advertising and touting for business on the forums but feel that a one line signature advert is totally different and should be allowed for anyone. Why should a boat repairer or met expert be treated any differently to a class association secretary?

We have several posters who are in business of one type or another and I tend to take more notice of their posts on their specific subject, than posters who "think" they know the answer.

This is outrageous!!!!

YBW, you just listen to your public please, the amount of benefit Simon gets from the 'advertising' is disproportionate to the benefit he provides to every boat owner who hits this web site. A service he does not charge for, his generosity should be applauded.

Another vote to allow Simon to keep posting his forecasts and a useful reference link in his sig. The longer range analysis is fascinating. Simon's posts do have a link at the bottom, but it's hardly outrageous, and his site is free for users once you get there.

Tricky one for the mods

I too support Simon and think an exception is justified in this case

Perhaps the mods might indicate to the complainant that if they could see their way to contributing a significant amount of time and effort into providing a free service on a regular basis plus posting frequent, detailed and quality professional advice free gratis then they too might be sufficiently respected by the community to be allowed a single line of text in their sig quietly advertising a further chargeable service of relevance and significant interest to the readership

Simon provides a free service here, no other commercial organisation does that. Perhaps if the complainee were to offer a similar free service their complaint might be justified? IPC should allow Simon his little bit of advertising based on the value his posts add to IPC's web offering.

Simon's service is invaluable and I can understand a possible conflict of interest.

As far as I can see, Simon posts altruistically, and should be allowed to keep posting. There are are numbe rof commercial posters (yacht delivery, charter) and there is no difference. Sauce goose gander.

Please keep Simon posting. It is a distinguished benefit to the forum, and an asset to YBW. Please ignore the fact that his forecasts are far more personal and accurate than others currently available on the site). And highly educational, so there must be a considerable safety spin-off for forum users.

Hi Guys,

YBW have informed me that they have received complaints about the signature on my posting being 'too commercial' and have (politely) asked me to remove references to my courses.

You may remember a few years back this issue was raised and at that time you felt that an exception should be made in my case as the service I was offering was of direct use to sailors, and that you understood the level of information I was providing could not be done completely non-commercially.

If forum users (and YBW) now feel that that position has changed then I'll reluctantly stop posting to the forum.

The moderators will no doubt monitor your responses, as indeed will I. I'm looking forward to your thoughts on this.

It's a shame because I was about to post a Round the Island Race forecast :(

Best wishes and possibly 'farewell',
Simon

I seem to remember that the threat to do this to you last time led to the departure of several thread heavy-weights: Claymore and Parahandy come to mind.

I would certainly vote for an exception being made for you in view of the excellent and free services you have provided for the members of this forum.

Long may they continue with our thanks.

Nothing is free.
Who pays for the forum?

I am sure YBW are capable of making a balanced decision, posters like Simon draw some people to the site, whereas his competitors may be paying for it.

It's the same issue all over the net, 'Who Pays?' and to what extent do you let them call the tune?

Really sorry to hear this - been away for a week and return to find your posting.
Not only have I found your comments and advice relevant and useful to me as a sailor - but helpful to me as Race Officer for club racing in the Bristol channel.
I am sure your emails attract people to the site and to YBW.
Best wishes,
Ken
