If you ask 10 people for their recommendation, you'll get 12 different answers.

For me, Farecla works well. I've used it for something like 30 years, starting back when i was in the motor trade. I use it now on my own boat and it brings dull GRP up like new. I also use Farecla "marine" wax, keeps it nice and shiny.

The compound does come in different grades.

I don’t disagree that it’s great where needed but before you go anywhere near a compound for polishing get some rags and alcohol and wipe the hull down. A LOT of “dull” grp is just a build up of polish and wax that’s gone chalky in the UV and a good clean with dish soap followed by alcohol will clean it off and leave it shiny again. Follow with a good wax for UV protection and the GRP will last longer.
If you’ve done that and still think it’s dull then yes try the polish.

It used to be the case that after compounding , practise was leaving the polish on the hull without polishing for the winter. Then polish in the spring. Any real benefit in doing this ? I would have thought that leaving the polish on would attract dirt.

Yes, in the spring you'd want to wash it all off and wax it to remove the dirt the polish had attracted. No idea why anyone would think that a good plan!

Farecla G3 is good stuff! It’s what I finished the Jotun Hardtop AX with on my boat after flatting the final coat with wet n dry

I use Farecla G3 every season, althogh there are different types of G3: liquid, paste etc. I think standard G3 is more abrasive and good for removing scratches and restoring dull coloured gelcoat. Water mist spray a square metre, dab on a few small blobs of polish then polish off with a lambswool mop on low speed. Wipe down with a duster when dry. You can then go for more finishing compounds but I don't usually bother.

You definitely shouldn't be using a cutting polish every season, you'll remove the gelcoat very quickly. Regular washing and a wax to protect from UV will protect far better and won't remove the finish.

I came across this advice back in the ‘70s and it took most of the season to get the old polish off, though it never occurred to me to use a solvent.
