Fan heater thermostat onboard?

TimeGuard Electronic Thermostat - switch off below 0

Be aware that the TimeGuard Electronic Thermostat only works 0 to 35 degrees - Which means it switchs off when it goes below Zero !

Discovered when the tempertaure went below zero last winter and the boat was freezing - fortunately I had drained everything so no damage

Basically - as useful as a Chocolate Fireguard - when you need it most then it isn't working

And yes I did phone the "helpline" and they confirmed this

I plan to use a mechanical one as the other posts describe.

IMHO it will make little difference. It's the location of the heater that is the problem together with a heater that is too powerful.

I have a switchable 1Kw/2Kw heater, made for Argos for 14 squid, had it a year, works fine in a small cabin at 1Kw.

First time I've heard of anyone complaining it was too HOT! :D

With that small a cabin, manual control seems to be a reasonable suggestion - just lean over and turn it off and on???

We just turn ours down once the chill has been taken off.
But it would be easy to modify the Maplins job with a suitable mains rated relay, which could be mounted remotely.

Timeguard doesn't work below 0ºC

Nonsense. It can "control to a temperature between 0ºC and 35ºC" which means that at the lowest setting it switches ON when the temperature goes below zero. Manufacturer site here.

Morning Nigel - not sure if you mean that it is nonsense because it doesn't work below 0ºC or if my post was nonsense :D

But - I'm only talking from experience - it doesn't work below 0ºC, if you want then I can give you mine to try - I'm never going to use it again

Stupidly I thought like you did that it would default "ON" when the temperature went below 0ºC, but it doesn't the default is "OFF".

The specification on their website doesn't say anything other than it works to control heating elements between 0ºC and 35ºC which it does fine - but because it is an Electronic Control when it goes outside that range it switchs off.
A conventional Mechanical Thermostat uses a Bi Metallic strip to switch on / off and that will always work in the correct mode when it goes outsidee it's operating range.

You can get specfic Frost Thermostats that operate in the 0ºC to 10ºC range - better to use those than normal Room Thermostats that ae meant for 15ºC to 25ºC

And finally - rather than use a Fan Heater with all their inherent dangers of catching fire I prefer to use a number of "Tube" Heaters positioned around the boat - typically used in Greenhouses they don't get hot enough to set anything on fire but provide enough heat to prevent freezing

Timeguard doesn't work below 0ºC

What would be the point of a thermostat that turned heating off if the temperature was too low? Your unit must be faulty.

I'd like to think / hope it was faulty - but no it's not - that's the design

I called the manufacturer and asked and they confirmed what I had found - that when the temperature goes below 0ºC the unit turns off.

On the other hand when the temperature goes above 35ºC, it also turns off - but then again as this is supposed to turn a heater on then that doesn't matter.

Anybody want one barely used Electronic Thernmostat by Timeguard - going cheap ;)

Well seems to work ok. Still experimenting with position of the sensor, up high wasn't great, mid height seems OK. Temp band between on and off definitely seems narrower than the internal thermostat.

And it was fun :)
