Famous Mariners Quiz

The Maiden lady, Ellen(give me a boat and I'll give the tears and a new record). Blondie (or was it Baldie) Hasler, and the Hiscocks.

By twisting the numbers I get 5, so does that give me a ride round the bay should I ever see you?

Jas is the first person to get Rum . . .

Poxy bloody effort that was - half of them are actors and with the exception of Tilman the rest are hardly worth the ink it would use.

Right Claysie ma loon,

Who's number three? No-one's got that yet.

. . . and if you made a bit of an effort to keep up you would realise that we have in fact been heading North for the last six or seven weeks, and have made considerably more northing than the good ship Claymore in that time, from 28deg 02'N to 32deg 42'N. At this rate we should make the latitude of Kilmelfort in time to celebrate your bus pass.

Definately Bill.... many a happy hour spent being drunk under the table by Bill who could outdrink any of us youngsters who all idolised him at Lymington and when we could hardly crawl at the end of the evening, he would be running down the pontoons!

What a man! 'Austere' would be an understatement to describe him..... If you wanted to go off on one of his 'adventures' you had to be prepared to live in conditions which would have been considered inhumane by Captain Bligh! Don't get me wrong... Bill just didn't seem to believe that 'luxuries' had any place onboard ship! Unfortunately, he considered 'good bedding', most safety gear and anything other than a chart, sextant and compass for navigation, a luxury!
But the world is a lot poorer for losing men like him!

That's an 11 pint salute to Bill Tillman!

Sorry. Silly me!. Smack wrist!.
I remember reading a story some years back about a chap who went sailing alone way up into the fiords of Greenland where another yacht is rarely seen. To his surprise one day, he sailed into a bay where he saw Mischief anchored. He sounded his horn and hailed but no sign of life. Fearing the worst, he closed and boarded Mischief and went below. There was Bill Tilman drinking a cup of tea and reading a book. He looked up and said, 'So its you, is it?'.

[/ QUOTE ] Bill Tilman used to advertise for crew for his jaunts in the small ads in the Times. The wording allegedly went:

'Crew wanted for long voyage in small boat. No pay, no prospects, not much fun'

I gather he was usually inundated with applicants . . .

Yes, I think it's Tracey.

The one who wrote such gems as 'all waves travel at 22 knots' and 'the wind on the sails force the boat to turn into the wind and the rudder turns it back. this combination of forces makes it go forwards'
