Sailing Boat?
Done the reverse trip several times(returning boats from Three Peaks)
Oban, tricky lots of lumpy bits and swirly currents, but many will know the waters better than I.
Break Trip at Howth,nice place.
Howth to Falmouth fairly straight forward if weather gods are smiling,We always planned for 5/6 days sailing and two days R&R in Howth.
If you want a crew,I've got my own wellies, and am free for Easter School Holidays. Can arrange reception and transport at Oban end.
I have a 3 pilot books, tidal stream booklets and recent charts covering most of that trip if you're interested. Postal costs plus the price of a good bottle of wine.
Western Islands of Scotland - one of the world's great cruising areas, if a little wet. Though talking of wet, I have found the bars a little thin compared to the welcoming 'craic' of SW Ireland. Something to do with the 'Wee Free' influence I suspect.
For which reason I'd recommend the slow route around the W Coast of Ireland. More friendly stops en route, even if the Atlantic swell can be unfriendly. But that will depend on how long you've got for the trip.
My web site will suffer a major update by 2 Jan, which will include new comparisons of European cruising areas - together with lots of broken links and spelling mistakes. This may, or may not, further inform your decisions. What's sure is that reading this forum has improved the site's content!
SWMBO is busy proof reading at this time, and declares that some of my opinions are as much 'off the edge' as my spelling. Ah well. Back to the maps and the hyperlinks . . . and a happy new year.
You wouldnt be thinking of planning a trip for Scottish ex pats currently languishing in Falmouth for the 2007 Chentlemans Cruise now, would you? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Yes, coincidentally I'm thinking of exactly this trip. Possibly taking the boat to Oban over a week either at the end of May or the middle of June, leaving her there and taking couple of weeks around the west coast sometime between mid July to mid August. If the weather on the way up is poor then maybe we can head for Southern Ireland. The concern is perhaps needing to get back from Oban if the weather is poor. PM me if you'd like to compare notes.
We are hoping to do this trip on our way back from the Canaries / Azores, but it will probably be in August. What vessel are you planning to make the trip in? If it is less than 30ft you can cruise in company with us.
hm, one option fromfalmoth is to pinch jimi's boat, sail it north, and then arrive with it as the "charter boat" and get him to chip in!
The othr possible is i *might* have a raggie boat by then (but the mobo is bigger so I am still technically a stinkpotter) so use that. Cept a potential ragboat might be/is on the other side of the atlantic. So may have to sail it back sharpish. That colmce said he was fine to do the trip and even tho it would be from Falmouth harbour Antigua he can't back out now.
So, rather than having a badly thought-out and hardly-implemented plan, we now have TWO hardly thought-out and badly implemented plans. Or three including the actual real chartering a boat idea, which got as far as para saying yes, that's an idea.
Oh, i have just realised that a roberts 41 might outrun a benny 331, damn.
Ah its not a Roberts 41 but a Roberts 34 with osmosis and wet carpets so I wud back the Benny anyway.
Think it's time someone pinched Jimi's boat and sailed it north - he's tried a few times himself.
As for plan B/C - well its early days yet..
