Morning all,

Would be very grateful for any information re the above course. Planning to sail direct - non stop, time taken, distance, any tips etc. Expect to leave UK June/July.

Many thanks for all replies,

David.

PS Cant take too long there is a beer waiting for me in Charlies Bar !!

If going direct, wait for a 4 or 5 dy weather window and head for Finisterre. Usually good to go after a low has passed by.
At Finisterre, bear left down the Spanish and Portuguese coast, keeping a look out for fishing net buoys, and bearing in mind that you can duck into a few places if weather, breakdown, or supplies, dictate - Baiona, Parvoa de Varzim, Lechoies, Cascais, Nazaire, Peniche, Sines........

At Cape St Vincent, turn left, and go for it. Aim to arrive at The Straits with the tide, and the wind. If the wind doesn't suit, nip into somewhere like Barbate, Rota, for a bit of R & R.

Why direct? There are some nice places worth a day or so on the way?

I'm planning a similar trip, but intend to stop off at La Coruna. Round the Lizard, I'm going SW to 9-10 degrees then South. I'm going out mainly to avoid the main shipping route.

Gib/La LInea

Hi,

Am leaving for Gib next week. Plan to stop over in La Linea in Spain and the Marina in Gib - if I can get in, I haven't used La Linea before but Marina Bay is to be recommended, price for...

I thought you had already made the voyage once!

Anyway,

1021 nautical miles (thank you google earth) 204 hours @ 5 kts.
Initial course after clearing the Falmouth Area 204 degrees true x about 455 miles to NW Spain,
After making a landfall NW Spain, the winds should be mostly Northerly down the Portuguese coast.

Good luck,

M.

One thing we did was stay outside the 1,000 fathom line in case of bad weather, which we had in June. Inside the line the waves are much higher. We left on the back of a cold front and did the highest 24 hour mileage ever, the wind goes NE.

I know you said a direct sail.... but just to say the new marina at Roscoff is now open and all the sevices on the pontoons are fully opational... The showers are still in temporary units whilstmthe rest of the work is carried out... but they are clean and in V good order.... Access is 24hr ans it is pretty well bomb proof against storms... Also Joceliene speaks very good English...

I think the main reason for this is it will be a solo trip. The route you suggest will be busier than going to 10degree. Otherwise, if I find crew, yes, Ushant would be better.
Ha, I plan to be sailing the opposite way at about the same time, also solo - maybe we'll bump into each other!

Cheers, Brian.
