How can we be charged to anchor in public rivers? I know Beauleigh is private or something but Falmouth? I thought it was the law of the sea or the like that natural harbours were free. So what is the legal situation?

Anchored off Falmouth last night . £18 just to anchor!

Helford could be worth a look. We’ve been anchored in here since Wednesday. Surprisingly quiet, bar the weekend ‘rush hour’ on Saturday lunchtime. Nothing to pay. Convivial surroundings. The way it should be!

How can we be charged to anchor in public rivers? I know Beauleigh is private or something but Falmouth? I thought it was the law of the sea or the like that natural harbours were free. So what is the legal situation?

The anchorage is in the Port of Falmouth. The Harbour commission will have a lease of the sea bed area in the Port from the Crown Estate and therefore can levy charges on what happens on their patch.

I’m currently anchored in the haven, loads of space and the town is handy for wet weather activities and it is very wet today, many miserable looking grockles. We paid 31 quid for two nights which is a bit steep for anchoring but a nice looong shower makes up for it. Did Helford Friday night plenty of anchoring space and several visitors buoys available.

Just paid £7 to Cornwall County Council to anchor up the river Fal last night. Everyone wants money from yotties...........and nothing in return. Killing the Golden Goose springs to mind.

You may find that the golden geese don’t mind shelling out a (very) few quid, whereas I doubt the typical tightwad yottie will have business’s eyes lighting up.

You'd think for the £1.50 per metre that Falmouth charge to anchor, they'd at least replace the seabed with something that made less of a mess of our anchor and chain! Very, very muddy.

We found the same in 2016, and were so appalled that we haven't been back since.
