I worked for a company who used to sell them in the 90s alongside Fairlines. Don't have any manuals but will try to answer any questions you may have.
Very popular starter boat.

Great boats. Well made. Most had the VP 4.3 431 or 4.3 AQ205, mated to a VP 290 DP variant.

So this is the state of play at the moment we bought the boat ,then had to source a trailer then the t5 wasn't able to pull it (legally) so had to source a car to pull it
Now we finally have it home and the work begins
It came with only 1 head so the V8 is coming out and a 4 pot C/w the leg is going in as we only want to river cruise Maybe the Avon anyone done this before?

There are many 22/23s on the Thames including their displacement hull cousins. Many came with the smaller 131 for Thames use although plenty of V8s! As with anything this length and a planning hull / outdrive they will wander quite a bit at a low speed so constant correction on the helm is needed but you soon get used to that, THE most important thing to remember is they will wobble a bit when getting on and off (at locks etc) so make sure you have some secure drinks holders!!!

Have you considered converting it to a twin outboard system.

For a river why twin - a single and quite small too would work. My parents had a 21ft Buckingham (so similar size and weight) - on the canal they had a 2 stroke 6hp. When that packed up they went to a 2 stroke 8hp and actually struggled to keep it down to the 4kt limit!

For a river you need a bit more - but a 9.9 or 15hp would be more than adequate if non-tidal and perhaps a 25 if tidal - that would also leave you a huge lazerette where the old inboard had been.

Easier to steer

Lots of cost / complexity just to make it a bit easier to steer!

Fit a small (or large) rudder to the outboard - will track perfectly straight then! Dad did it to our old boat - 2 rudders one each side of the prop - fitted to the cavitation plate - just aluminium bent to 90 degrees - cost buttons - worked perfectly.

Agreed will be easier to turn in a marina with twins - but total overkill for river use... 21 / 22 ft is a pretty easy steer anyhow - different if it was 40' but then I would still go single but with bow thruster (or even bow and stern thruster)

The Falcon 23 had a central transom door
An outboard would be a total abomination.
