Depends on the make.

I would think anyone that fits real teak decks could do a fake one with their eyes closed ?
Fake teak is synthetic/plastic. Can be very realistic and very resilient to anything thrown at it

It depends on how it's done. Some companies map the deck using laser equipment and then produce finished panels in a factory, ready to glue on to the boat. It's not all laid as strips.

We're still hoping we can work magic on the original 30 year old teak. We'll come to our senses shortly and realise this needs to be sorted.

IMO surface preparation for the new plastic decking is paramount. The deck substrate has to be absolutely fair. Any lumps and bumps (eg slight deck distortion around chainplates) needs to be dealt with. If not, once the deck is laid these will be come more obvious (to me anyway) and shout out plastic deck not the teak look you were wanting.
