Fairway patrol

The interesting thing about this is that I don't necessarily have ID on me on board the boat (the only thing I've got is my driving licence anyway, don't have a passport, and that I tend to leave at home in safety when heading down to the boat)

Not boat related, but the only time I have been asked for ID I showed him my name on a credit card. My plod was quite happy with this. Would guess that if whatever you show them ties in with whatever they have access to on the radio then they are happy.

I'd imagine that any official looking document with a name on it would suffice. They have no way of knowing who should be on the boat. If no-one had any form of ID at all they may get more excited...

I been thinking about what would I do in this situation , if sailing with family then I'm the only one with a form of ID and that's my driving licence , none of us have passports , would a oyster card (bus pass) do for kids ? , what about the missus , she has no ID's .

I wouldn't have a problem with national ID cards for this reason .

I was checked out three times in one day  on the Medway in 2010 (I think it was then). It was when there were protests about the powerstation and there were a lot of squiffy little boats out and about with protestors dressed as pirates. They were very polite but seemed to have trouble recognising that they'd spoken to us in the previous couple of hours... :D

I think you were referring to the 'rebel raft regatta'?

They had a website with navigation photo's, raft building instructions etc.

I was thinking of sticking our boat on the power station jetty to help out with the climate change problem.....but we're a bit precious about her!

Saw the 'Little Ship of Peace' too approaching wind over tide in a F6 as we left for Ramsgate.

When I was last there the marina office at Calais interest in registration documents seem to be limited to writing down the owners' name and the boat's length without the usuall exchanges in Franglais!

I don't recall being asked for anything at Gravelines but there was a few years ago.

In all the times I've sailed into a French port, only once - at Dieppe - has anyone taken an interest in passports or personal id. The SSR cert lives in an 'arrival' folder but has never seen the light of day.

I suspect that will echo most people's experiances of going foreign, Calais stuck in my mind as it was the only time anybody has asked for the registration cert.

Ironically the only time it has been waved in front of an official was on a waiting bouy just outside St Kats as I was trying to get the Met Police officer off the boat as quickly and painlessly as possible so we would not miss the next lock!
