Just curious: why is it crazy to have the fuel tank under a berth? I ask because my bed is constructed atop and around a 1500 litre additional tank that I ordered specially. I mean my bed kind of is a fuel tank :D

I suppose whether you are next to a fuel tank (as in my case) or over the tank is all much of a muchness. Just thought it would've prone for giving off diesel smell via leakage or osmosis !? Either way I've ended up with a water tank that smells like a petrol pump
 
One of my neighbours who owns a 24ft sportscruiser has joined his black water and fuel tanks together, to extend his cruising range! . Not impossible it's been done on the boat you're viewing

Does the compartment tag holds the fuel tank smell of diesel? Is this a new boat you and that smell was there when you bought it or something that has happened recently?

In that case why don't you ask the vendors about the cause of the fuel smell (via the broker if there is one).
There should be no diesel smell. The suggestion of accidentally putting fuel in the water tank is worth checking out.

That Poole boat http://parkstonebayyachts.com/boats-for-sale/view/Fairline-Targa-34-1999-for-sale-poole-5882193 (Christchurch) had rather too much of a poverty spec for my liking. No holding tank, has a gas galley (likely never been used like every other one I've seen), no heating, dodgy cockpit table, dodgy painted engine vents, etc. Shame the owner hadn't addressed some of this instead of spending £4k on an audio upgrade. I'd have to spend £7-8k to be happy with it for a UK boat (double that and add some to make it suitable for the Med).
 
I think you're being a bit harsh. Agreed the cockpit table is awful, but easily replaceable.

No holding tank / no heating hardly makes it "poverty spec" in my book.

Assuming all is well, (including the machinery,) for the price, I reckon it looks like a pretty decent boat.

Fair cop, on the plus side it has got KAD44's, electronic controls and a bow thruster so could be worse.
