Hi All,

Considering a 2000 Fairline Targa 30 with 750 hours on it. Due to view and sea trial it this coming week. I'll definitely be arranging a survey but is there anything obvious I should be looking out for?

Thanks in advance
Mark

Best 30ft sports cruiser at era guessing its running KAD32, So should be good for 38k with clean bottom and stern gear.

Well made by Fairline, normally no major defects on hull or body work, fitout check window screen rubbers known to break down resulting in leaks to cabin.
Check below floor via access hatches for water, under rear bed .
Check shower tray for cracks.
If Blue hull possible fading to rear quarters .
Teak condition on rear bathing platform.
Engines good service history and particular outdrives/legs and props condition
Recommend mechanical survey ad well.
Lots of info on forume relating to earlier models 1994 Targa 28, T29 1998 ish

^^ That.

Go with the mentality that you are buying 21 year old volvos with a targa caravan attached for free and you wont go wrong.

Eyes wide open on the engines and drives , bulkheads delaminating from hull .

Just bought a (much older) T27 which was re-engined with KAD 32 in about 2006, with 545 hours.
I am advised by at least two independent marine engineers that these engines are "bulletproof" (their words) but nevertheless you NEED comprehensive survey AND mechanical inspection. I did all this, but due to previous owner(s) lack of care and attention, next week s/b engine is coming out as some berk actually fitted a tilt sensor such that it can't be removed. More on this whole experience later ...
A strong purchase contract that enables you to either quit and run - or renegotiate (as I did) is essential if 'undisclosed/undeclared faults' emerge in survey or restriction. I did this but the engine out thing was still unexpected.
Fairline are strong and well made (not always well wired!) and will reward your care. I will get this boat right in a couple of weeks and then we'll see how she flies!
Invest in the checks (and be prepared to walk and lose the survey costs), but if you work with care you'll get a great boat with reliable engines. Be diligent and thorough in your negotiations .

Good luck!

Your taking engine out to change the trim potentiometer ? Bonkers if you are who told you engine needs to come out for that , im guessing that it won’t lift out vertically due to transom shield not being cut out enough .

Hi volvopaul,
Right enough. It's tight in there, but the sensor should just lift out as you suggest. However, the thing won't budge - it appears to have either seized in there or worse still, might even have been sealed or bonded in. It's just not moving. You're also right about vertical space around the transom shield too, which is tight, but ought not to have been an issue had the sensor been free to move. I have seen it all for myself.
However, getting the engine out will have some long term benefits in the refit, and the engines can be cleaned as can the bilges.
I'll keep you posted - and thanks for your contribution

Targa 30 could be bought with a lux pack that included side hull windows. These are prone to leaking due to deterioration, so check locker in salon for standing water, check galley storage bin beside sink drainer for standing water.

Hinges of locker doors above sink in galley prone to breaking if boat has been abused.

Great boat.
